And that’s just the first story. They seem to be returning Garcia just so that they can prosecute him for what have to be totally bullshit charges that they’ve trumped up. (Which really doesn’t give me any confidence any trial will be fair either.) They’re bringing him back in order to claim, “See, all the people we put in the concentration camp deserve to be there.”
Yeah, conspiracy theories are basically a response to (normal, banal) weirdness, specifically coincidences and ineptitude. People look at coincidences related to a significant event, even when the coincidences are totally meaningless, and say, “It can’t be a coincidence that…” when, of course, it absolutely could be. People have an even greater response to ineptitude, when it’s clear that serious, constant ineptitude can occur even among the most powerful (who are expected to be the most able, because of the just world fallacy).
The Trump administration is doing some interesting things to the idea that “they couldn’t possibly be that inept” - creating a division between people who realize just how inept they are, and those who, in denial, end up falling down rabbit-holes of total conspiratorial thinking. Trump support is driven by conspiracy theories, but the insane incompetence of the Trump administration is, by itself, causing a rise in people consumed by conspiracy theories.
