This shows up a few headlines below:

Feds moving to ‘take over’ California National Guard, Gov. Newsom says

The federal government is “moving to take over” the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers, Gov. Gavin Newsom said today.

“That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions,” he said in a statement. “LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice.”

Newsom said he is in close coordination with the city and county of Los Angeles and there is “currently no unmet need.”

Border czar Tom Homan said earlier today on Fox News that federal authorities were mobilizing to deploy the National Guard.

“This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust,” Newsom said.

Of course, every single person Trumpy has brought into the Federal government is a huge security risk too.

It looks like trump has deployed 2000 National Guard troops to California.

We already know they don’t know what that word means…

Given the demographics of the Cali Natl Guard, there’s a nonzero chance they’d side with the protesters over ICE if given illegal orders.

my growing fear is that the stephen millers would like nothing better than to have a large public push back to their lawless deportation efforts as a cause to declare martial law. it’s really super depressing to see that the local police are all just backing the masked-up no ID giving ICE/HSI gestapo; when metro police all have to be open about their identities (where’s the mayor?) @#$!! …having typed that blather, i’m so impressed, so proud, when the public does come out and pushes back!

I have no doubt that Miller thinks that, actually… But that’s not going to play nearly as well as he thinks. Some media are gonna spin it as “well, they deserve what they get” but not all of them will… and people will not be pleased to see this on their TVs/internets. The national guard will actually be better about not wanting to treat US citizens like “the enemy” than the cops or ICE will be. They are not trained like police, but like US soldiers with a stronger sense of things like actually defending the constitution, etc.

Yeah, but not really surprising, either. Especially from the LAPD.

Yeah, it’s awesome. People are reaching a breaking point on this stuff, It seems.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this all day, and I can’t come up with a way in which this doesn’t specifically amount to a threat by Trump to violate the 1st amendment. Trump can’t claim he meant it would have a negative impact on Tesla sales by customers staying away, upset with his politics, because that ship has sailed. If Musk was a politician, there would potentially be an interpretation that wasn’t a constitutional violation, but he isn’t, so there isn’t.

Arguably, Musk is a politician at this point. Somewhat different1) from the usual lot, but still.

1) I.e. worse.

So his ICE agents won’t be allowed to wear masks either, right? What do they have to hide?

“Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth later threatened to mobilise active-duty marines if violence continued, saying troops at nearby Camp Pendleton were on “high alert”. Newsom described this threat as “deranged behaviour”.”

I thought Congress had to authorize the use of active duty military inside the country.

This is very dangerous.

“…why, if M— is so batshit, T— gave him unfettered access to our data…”

I ask myself a related question, where I ask the American voters why they endorsed both of these men, despite mountains of evidence of batshittery.

On good days, I try to place blame on the American electorate being manipulated by media, whether by Christofascists, broligarchs and Sili Valley’s nerd reich, Putin, etc.

On my bad days, I think maybe the human species is in majority so flawed it [we] will not dig out of the fatal pit it has created for itself, and deserves what it gets. This planet may take a long time to recover but be the better without us.

History is full of people like him and his ilk, dating back as far as we have records. Xenophobia, narcissism, greed and fear (never forget fear, it might be the biggest motivator out there) plus lust for power over others has been a constant in himan psychology. I honestly don’t know if “and yet we move forward” is even true. Certainly, technologically we do, at an ever increasing pace. But in respect for our fellow humans? That seems to be more pendulum-like, with strides forward sparking backlash and repression. In my lifetime, it certainly seems we are better than when i was a kid and homophobia and racism were approved and actively taught, but (@mindysan33, help me out here) it seems there have been far more progressive societies over history than ours at our best. Even given that, i will stick with the advice i give my overwhelmed kids all the time. You can’t change the world, that’s too big a task. But you can change the little corner you have influence in. You can make it more accepting, more helpful, more lovely, more human. That might not seem like much, but it really is all you can do. But if you do that, and so do hundreds, thousands, millions of others, it adds up. Might be corny, but that’s what we try to live by in my little corner. I have to lecture myself frequently because it seems there are lots of folks working the other way, but they are truly a small, if very loud, minority. I will do what i can with what i have where i am as best i can. Nothing else i can do.
