The dictator of the failed north American country was reported today taking over the capital city with the help of his loyal troops, the so called “federals”, taking away control from the municipal government’s police. It does not appear that the provinces on the east and west coasts, held by separatist forces, plan any violent action in response. The political wing of the separatists, being suffered to take part in the capital’s puppet parliament, were characteristicly timid. With this action and a vow to further take control of key cities with the help of government troops, the strongman’s control over the country appears to be tightening, reducing the odds of a peaceful transition of power at the end of his nominal administrative period.

It’s pretty unclear on how the Trump administration is going to balance the trade deficit with Switzerland (which is for some reason something important to do?) if we’re not putting any tariffs on their main export to the United States. I don’t think that a high tariff on their pocket knives and cuckoo clocks sold in the U.S. is going to make up the difference…

Recently reading that the MAGA favorite to replace Erika McEntarfer as head of BLS is E.J. Antoni. Someone did a run-down of their relative academic qualifications: McEntarfer got her PhD in 2002, has 47 publications which have 1327 citations. (So she’s published significant, well-regarded work.) Antoni got his PhD in 2020 and has no publications other than his dissertation which has 1 citation. (In other words, he’s a nobody who has done nothing and no one takes him seriously.) Then there was Trump’s attempt to counteract the data in the BLS report by bringing Stephen Moore to do his tv presentation with nonsense graphs. Paul Krugman had this description of Moore:
I don’t mean that Moore is extremely right-wing, although of course he is. I don’t even mean that he’s a dishonest hack, although again of course he is. I mean that even among dishonest right-wing hacks Moore stands out for his pathological inability to get numbers and facts right.
The Trump administration talks a lot about “DEI hires” (that they’re getting rid of) and “merit-based hires” (with which they are replacing people) but they make it abundantly clear, with every firing and hiring, that they want not just incompetence, but pretty extreme incompetence. Krugman points out that the only thing you need to read to understand what’s going on is Hannah Arendt’s “The Origins of Totalitarianism,” which the Trump administration could not be illustrating more perfectly:
Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.
The consistent persecution of every higher form of intellectual activity by the new mass leaders springs from more than their natural resentment against everything they cannot understand. Total domination does not allow for free initiative in any field of life.
