President John F. Kennedy said many years ago, geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends, economics has made us partners and necessity has made us allies. That rang true for many decades prior to President Kennedy’s time in office, and in the decades since, from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of the Korean Peninsula, from the fields of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, we have fought and died alongside you during your darkest hours during the Iranian hostage crisis. Those 444 days, we worked around the clock from our embassy to get your innocent compatriots home. During the summer of 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged your great city of New Orleans, or mere weeks ago when we sent water bombers to tackle the wildfires in California. During the day, the world stood still, Sept. 11, 2001, when we provided refuge to stranded passengers and planes. We were always there, standing with you, grieving with you. The American people."

The Democrats have been deluged with messages that the mistake they made in the election was not in providing a compelling set of policies with tangible results for Americans, rather than just being anti-Trump, which seems insane in the current moment to focus on. But AOC, in particular, has been extremely vocal about fighting everything the Trump administration is doing, and not mincing any words describing what’s happening, and that’s most of what I’ve seen from her. But obviously she feels the need to also try to provide compelling policies to run on, simultaneously as part of the counter-force to Trumpism. I don’t know if she bought into the message the Democrats are being given, or she’s feeling pressure to do that, or she just wants to give people something beyond basic survival to fight for, but it is awkward at best.

But yeah, even knowing that at least AOC realizes the seriousness of the situation, I find it doesn’t help much. It’s not just you.

That’s definitely different from other Dem messaging I’ve seen, which has been much worse. They don’t seem to have any coordinated messaging right now.

 Not sure if that’s the reason recent press coverage of protests against immigration policy feature folks burning pictures of Rubio, but I’m sure they’ll have no problem adding another image to the pyre.

I understand the points being made, and yeah, Trump’s an incompetent buffoon just as he ever was, but this time he seems to be completely above the law and has the Supreme Court, billionaires and mainstream media 100% on his side, while the Democrats talk about bipartisanship. His Project 2025 buddies have made a plan for him, and if he dies, that plan will still be in motion. Things are not the same as the first time around, he really is more powerful and more dangerous now. The idea that our institutions will save us at this point just doesn’t feel credible any more.

There are still some points of hope in there, like the difficulty of maintaining fascism in a country this large, the ways we can resist on a local level, the tendency of the right to turn on itself and try to accomplish contradictory goals, so thanks for that. I realize the shock-and-awe swiftness of the first week is part of the strategy, and maybe things will shift and look different as people have time to respond more, it just feels like cold comfort in the face of how successful he’s been already.

I really wonder if there are more of us. Sure, Trump only barely won the popular vote, but as far as I’m concerned the non-voters are fascists too- just lazy fascists who aren’t terribly passionate about it, but were still more than happy to sacrifice vulnerable populations by failing to show up and fight the threat. If we include them, are we really still the majority any more? I believe they’re more likely to turn to our side as Trump’s horrible policies affect them, since they’re not actually part of his devoted cult, but if they couldn’t even be bothered to fill out a ballot, why should I believe they’d be valuable allies? It seems just as likely they’d snitch on us or become Trump’s enforcers out of convenience, since they appear to have no strong beliefs one way or the other. I don’t trust them.

I appreciate the concern. I’m surprised to hear that I seem notably worse off than others, and it makes me feel slightly guilty, as I’m in a safer position than a lot of people- I’m in a fairly lefty area in a blue state, and all my traits that would make Republicans love to exterminate me aren’t obvious just from looking at me- I could “pass” as one of them if I had to. I think part of the reason is that I’m a full time caretaker for a relative with advanced Alzheimer’s, and have been for almost a decade. I won’t go into endless detail, but suffice to say, it gets harder and harder every month, it makes self-care difficult, it’s been slowly driving me insane for years as I’m cut off from a social life, traveling, or pursuing a serious career, and I’m essentially a prisoner here, with little free time and no ability to leave the house for more than a few hours, which severely limits my ability to try to join community efforts to resist Trump, increasing my feelings of being helpless and useless.

However, if you’re worried about my safety, don’t be. The same responsibility that keeps me from living a normal life also makes suicide unthinkable, as I have people depending on me who I would never abandon. Besides, I’ve promised myself to at least outlive Trump, so I can defile his grave. It’s the only justice he’s ever going to get, apparently.

Thanks. Simple advice, but easy to forget sometimes, and it does help. Even under my current circumstances, I’m still able to take a walk around the block now and then, and I ought to.

Look, Jerkoff Justin, here’s what we’ll do. I’ll drop the very powerful tariffs if you accept my yugely artful deal of becoming governor of our great 51st state. Don’t accept and, well, I know where to find your bed and a horse that’s on its last legs, catch my drift?
