Yeah, I suspect some of these people are starting to speak up just because polling is showing something like over 70% of Americans opposing these deportations.
Not quite the same thing, but Arthur Hailey wrote a novel in 1962 about something similar to Burnham’s ideas:
This can and will happen to US citizens. I imagine the chaos is also going to have fun side effect in an uptick in human trafficking.
The lunatics really do run the asylum here.
Absolutely. The whole “If you break the law, you are not entitled to due process” argument is so fucking duplicitous, but the Magat’s don’t see it. If you kill due process, how do you know who broke the law? Because someone in authority said so? Innocent until proven guilty has been a cornerstone of our criminal law system since the beginning. (Although that has way to frequently been “only in theory rather than practice”) If due process is no longer a thing, you are guilty by accusation, and wake up in a foreign concentration camp outside of the reach of US courts. There is no opportunity to show that you are a citizen. This is being set up to disappear anyone who speaks out against this gang of thugs. And the exile to foreign prisons to put them outside of the reach of US courts has got to be a conscious choice to make it irreversible.
I think it was on the twoXChromosomes subreddit that someone brought up that traffickers may use the fact that ICE is now snatching people off the streets and are not wearing any kind of identifying markers, like uniforms. How will anyone know if they were taken by ICE or traffickers? Or even if ICE starts trafficking people?
100% a choice.
It’s been a fucking mission for a while now.
With the agencies that regulate this shit dismantled by doge, employees either loyalist or cowed into submission, we probably won’t really know how many men, women, and children are lost in this first wave of fascism… ever.
And it is early days.
Meanwhile Doge is claiming real estate worth hundreds of millions from agencies it takes over for itself and Trump is talking about invading Canada and Mexico to unify “America.”
I remember way back when during the Bush era being like “this citizens united thing is going to be really bad for everyone.”
And it was.
Gotta sing the praises of Senator Cory Booker who is at least showing more Democratic party resolve than some cautiously worded ping-pong paddles. That is, he’s doing something…
Cory Booker wrecks Trump and Musk in marathon speech on Senate floor
Tuesday, April 01, 2025 at 7:35:02a PDT
Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey took to the Senate floor on Monday night for a marathon speech lambasting the actions of the Trump administration alongside Trump megadonor Elon Musk.
“I’m heading to the Senate floor because Donald Trump and Elon Musk have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people,” Booker wrote before beginning his speech.
Booker began his speech at 7 PM ET on Monday and has spoken for over 14 hours. As of this article’s writing, the speech is ongoing…
so he’s probably ‘running’ for Senate Democratic leader but that’s ok with (gormless) me
It’s amazing how many MAGA types don’t seem to grasp that. There’s currently a bill (IGA - House Bill 1008) worming its way through the Indiana general assembly to adjust the Illinois / Indiana borders with Indiana taking somewhere around a third of Illinois states.
From Axios: “The proposed Indiana bill would create an Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission to ‘embrace neighboring counties that want to join low-tax, low-cost Indiana.’”
Admittedly, those counties mirror Indiana’s relationship to the other states in the USA quite well: they are very much economically dependent on the other Illinois states. Indiana is low-tax and low-cost, but it’s also low-services and low-infrastructure! Illinois would benefit if those counties joined Indiana.
But of course it’s not just Indiana takes 33 counties and goes home. Apparently they also would be giving Illinois several counties in exchange … and for some reason, those are mostly the more prosperous ones. No, it doesn’t make sense to me, either. I also haven’t checked the numbers, but with the resulting population change, I think Indiana could lose a representative while Illinois gained one. Frankly, I’m starting to like this plan!
(And as this image ̶n̶o̶t̶e̶s̶ implies, apparently Missouri gets in on the exchange too. )
Well what’s circled in red is St. Louis. So I guess East St. Louis goes to Indiana from Illinois. I don’t see any part of Missouri changing hands in that image. It’s hard to tell, though.
Yeah, I wasn’t sure about that, but this was the only image I could find with the population / area information that wasn’t a thumbnail. The Reddit poster seemed to have a little more about that part, but I figured that was beyond the focus. I think when you start trying to make sense of crap like this it’s just going down a whole rabbit cavern of madness anyway.
(And the fact that this stupid bill has actually passed a few of the initial hurdles is even farther into loony land. Yes, Indiana, one of the reasons you’re low cost is that your state reps have little enough to do that they can write up bills like this one.)
From that article:
This history makes clear that America has a moral obligation to continue providing aid to Ukraine
There are two words in that sentence that the author fails to understand are meaningless if not unrecognisable to Trump. I don’t think I need to point them out. Neither on their own are words he comprehends, together they are ‘incomprehensibility squared’ to his narcissistic, transactional, self-serving brain cell.
They were either bearing false witness then or they’re bearing false witness now.
Or, both. It’s probably both.
They can’t get rid of Indianapolis, and Bloomington is too far south, but at least this way they get rid of blue bastions like Gary and South Bend (Notre Dame).
The reality is that this can’t happen and isn’t going to happen. And yes, it would be advantageous to New Illinois residents, but we’d be paying more federal taxes to be siphoned off by the even-worse New Indiana, so not an unmitigated win.
It’s not hard for someone who had to trace the state border in school as a child!
As you say, that’s the St Louis, MO/East St Louis, IL area. What the map does is give ESL to Missouri, as @awfulhorrid pointed out.
