Migraine warning for standard web design.
Feelings aren’t facts. One of my wisest therapists told me that. Obviously, no one’s told this creature that helpful bit of advice.
In Germany, the school history books used to go straight from Kaiser Willy to Adenauer.
How about teaching four or more “sides” to the holocaust?
First side: personal memoirs about “survival” in the camps
Second Side: The Wannsee Conference and the engineering of genocide
Third Side: what the Soviet, American and British armies found when they “liberated” the camps.
Fourth Side: the political and military considerations that persuaded the Americans not to bomb the rail networks feeding the camps.
The conceit that there might only be two sides to a story comes from lazy journalism and philosophical blinders.
…and the fact that there’s only two sides to a coin…or a piece of paper currency.
There’s always two sides - ‘us’ vs ‘them’; ‘good’ vs ‘bad’.
In politics, religion, sports, etc. People have this natural affinity for dividing things into those two separate categories and simplifying everything to fit that picture. We’re the good guys, they’re the bad guys.
The high cost of Nazi-ing.
I keep thinking about that scene from “The Waltons”…I looked it up, and it’s from Season 5, Episode 5, “The Firestorm”, but I can’t find a free clip of it.
Basically, the locals whip themselves into a furor and start burning books because they’re in German (Hitler is bad, therefore everything German is bad). A book gets thrown onto the bonfire and the dad recognizes what it is and pulls it out right away, then turns to a person who has been hiding the fact that she’s German and asks her to read it. She opens to the first page and reads in German. Then he tells her to translate: In the beginning was the Word…(etc.).
I’d want to do the exact opposite: hold a copy of the Bible without revealing the title, complain about all the alternative marriage hookups, glorification of violence, and the fact that it even published a recipe for committing abortion, then when the crowd is fully convinced of its many horrors, throw it on the fire in such a way that they can see the cover.
I hope the families of the victims go after he and his family in a civil suit and take everything they have.
Which sounds mild, if you compare what the victims lost to what those assholes have.
So in the event of a shoot-out, whoever wins the shoot-out can always claim self-defense. Seems the point of having laws and courts is to avoid this situation, not to create it. Of course, the laws and courts will still apply when they reinforce the power structure, just not when they might rein it in.
But you can only get away with it if you’re a white cis-male.
That really did NOT go where it seemed to be going.
