I work at a bookstore and have been sending lightly damaged books to a prison pen pal for several years- they’re books that got banged up during shipping but are still perfectly readable, and are typically donated anyway, so I got permission to set some aside for this particular prisoner and pay the shipping fees to send them to her through the store. As long as they’re paperbacks and I’m sending only five at a time, this has worked out great.
Until today, when I came in to find that a box I sent in late January was rejected and sent back, with a note saying “Per SIS, (bookstore name) is not a reputable bookstore.” Whatever the fuck that means. As best I can tell SIS is Special Investigative Supervisor, a position that investigates potential illegal activity of prison inmates or staff, but “not a reputable bookstore”? We’re an independent bookstore that’s been in business since the 1970s and a beloved fixture of the community, what more reputation is expected to be able to continue sending books as we already have for years?
This reeks of fascist meddling- either the books are too “woke”, the inmate is Black and female and thus has been unpersoned and doesn’t get to receive mail any more, the only bookstores considered “reputable” under the oligarchy are Amazon and big box retailers, or some combination of all three. I’ve been trying to reach the prison for an explanation but was told I’d have to talk to the mail room people (who were out, despite it being 3:30 in the afternoon their time), so I’ll have to wait until at least tomorrow for an official explanation, but I somehow doubt this has coincidentally become a sudden problem under the administration that hates Black people, women, prisoners, independent small businesses, readers and books.
Friday update: Called again, mail room still out but I got their usual hours and will try calling earlier on Monday.

Wisconsin has a history of this, with the most recent bout rearing up back in the fall when Wisconsin prison officials changed a library book donation policy to “new books only” claiming it was to prevent the smuggling of drugs. To no one’s surprise, this did absolutely nothing to stop the influx of drugs (by staff, naturally,) but it did reduce prisoner’s access to materials. The policy is still under effect of course, with officials dodging questions left and right.
But hey, it’s okay, they sent reporters pictures of the prison library, so that proves prisoners still have access to books, right? 
Yeah, it’s very much fascist bullshit.

I mean my great aunt was violently targeted and permanently expelled for wearing pants/trousers in public as a straight woman so idk. This probably targets anyone but straight white men who dress in the conventions and fashions dusty himself prefers and is intended as a license to commit violence against anyone for any reason ultimately.
