This makes me think about what else have I missed in the Bottomless Bog.

ended up coining efilism —“life” spelled backwards—during this period to insist that every sentient organism is a factory for pain and ought to be snuffed out.

God damn, that’s stupid.

“”…in a swamp of heterodox debating, particularly centered around New Atheism…“”

Oh so that’s what they got up to after they chased the “sjw” out of their ranks I guess?

Anti-life only makes me think about this guy.

I can actually remember seeing the argument online once or twice even before that. A couple obviously depressed people who were looking to rationalize why existence was a mistake (and if you come up with an excuse to count negatives but not positives, of course that’s the result). I guess just like the whole MRA and incel thing it must have been festering. :frowning:

I can hear him saying that.

Gah, these people are just nihilistic assholes… I wish they’d stop trying to dress up their stupid, misanthropic world view with pseudo-intellectual BS…

No Donny, these men are nihilists; there’s nothing to be worried about.

At some point, my younger self realized, “if everything is meaningless, then so is meaninglessness.” Then it was like the sun came out and, I would suspect, I became more bearable to be around. YMMV.

Right? Hey project your own suicidal ideation into others and then use it to justify taking their lives because deep down inside you suspect yours isn’t going to be missed much?

I don’t know if this has a real ideology that can really be called a movement. It’s just narcissistic collapse or something like that right?

I think, and yes, it is my opinion, that this is a group of very depressed people (i am guessing mostly men) who have twisted their “i wish i did not exist” into “no one should exist.” I could feel very bad for him except that he hurt other people. They need therapy. Badly.

Two other things come to mind though too.

  1. The idea that if you are a smart rational guy, your feelings and opinions must be objectively correct.
  2. The idea that if you know what’s best for people, it’s stupid that you should have to get consent from them to make it so.

Those feel a lot broader. I’m guessing the first is where the connection to New Atheism comes in, they attracted a lot of those. And of course they hate SJWs who think they might need to listen to other people. But like even look at Heikki’s links about Yudkowsky and “rationality”, and how people like him are an inspiration for the tech CEOs trying to kill democracy, and…I can’t quite articulate it but it feels like this kind of fake rationalism has become a regressive movement in itself, and this is just a particularly nasty manifestation.

There’s probably a non zero amount of edgelords promoting this nonsense. Some for decades; yet they’re still here.

A bit like those guys who talk about needing to cull the population to save the planet who used to pop up at TOP .
