The ASPA has been nicknamed the “Hague Invasion Act” by opponents because of a clause that authorizes military action to rescue any U.S. citizens who have been detained for prosecution by the court. That used to seem like a far-fetched scenario.

President Trump said Friday he does not believe white nationalism is a rising global threat after a gunman who espoused that ideology massacred 49 Muslims at mosques in New Zealand during their afternoon prayers.

“I don’t really,” Trump said when asked at the White House whether white nationalists were a growing global threat. “I think it’s a small group of people that have very, very serious problems. It’s certainly a terrible thing.”

I knew that the US wasn’t a signatory. I probably knew that there was a ban on investigation within the US. The ban on investigators doesn’t surprise me either. The authorization for open warfare with a purported ally, on the other hand…

I was mostly thinking of the way the US government view itself as above any law or moral stricture. Open warfare would be a big escalation, but not a change of direction.
