Although it’s a yawn, it looks like he is cursing me out, which he did when I put him back on the floor. (Buns swear by flicking their hind paws at you while hopping. It’s a huge F. U. when the do it. So cute!)
Fireworks are illegal in city limits but that has never stopped people. I’ll be in my bedroom snuggling with the cats. They get a bit freaked out but having me awake and available seems to be enough.
At least it shouldn’t last until 1am like on New Year’s.
We have the same problem in our town. My neighbor across the street is miffed because three of us turned down his invitation to watch him set off illegal fireworks. People can be so selfish.
Joey and Cirrus (the “babies”) freaked out when a nearby neighbor launched a barrage of illegal (within the city limits) fireworks. Both ran growling, belly-to-the-ground into the den, to hide under the couch. The two older cats were alert but not very upset.
The nearby neighbor has stopped launching, so maybe the worst is over.
It’s starting to rain. I’m hopeful they set them all off soon so we can be done.
Fireworks are very pretty. But people should stick to sparklers. The others are too dangerous and too loud. It isn’t like there’s no professional displays near by! One people can see well from less than a mile from their homes (we walked a block) and two huge ones within 15-20 miles.
Our cats are quite unbothered by the fireworks, they seem mildly curious about the sounds if anything. I’d call it a win, my old cat definitely hated thunder and fireworks so its good to see our current cats not be scared of the noise.
Ours were pretty calm through most of the celebrations, but we had two “tower” fans going in the room, and I suspect they muffled the noise enough that the cats didn’t really notice.
That ended when we went up to bed and shut off the fans. Bed time is treat time for the kitties. The boys (Gus and Hobbes) didn’t seem bothered by the noise, or were perhaps distracted enough by treats that they were OK. Sophie, on the other hand, went on alert at the first “boom” - frozen stance, ears up, etc. - and actually refused to eat her treat. (Fortunately, it didn’t go to waste, as Hobbes can be relied on to clean up any leftovers.)
We brought Sophie into the bedroom for a while and snuggled her, and that seemed to calm her down.
