A friend and I were joking (well, not entirely) a few years ago about the “getting to know you questions” between two trans people. One of the questions we came up with was “do you work in IT or the medical field?”
I’m a dedicated Linux person, although I use (mostly) Mint, not Arch. I have to use Windows for work, unfortunately.
I’m curious as to the idea behind this? Wendy Carlos of “Switched-On Bach” is an early well-known transgender electronic music composer/musician. Is there a connection?
There have been a lot of trans women in electronic music, but yeah, Wendy Carlos has been an inspiration to many. Sophie, Arca, Patricia Taxxon, Lisa Bella Donna, SynthWitch, Honey Dijon, Octo Octa, Eris Drew…
Also in synth design. Winterbloom, Synthfox and Cyndustries off the top of my head, all have made Eurorack modules. Mutable Instruments was one of the most influential brands in Eurorack before the founder/sole designer Emilie retired from it.
Several months back I found a site that would let you setup an RSS feed for a number of comics. I have been reading QC for a long time, but was not there from the start. It took a few hundred strips before he started dropping in most serious pieces in between the humor, but when he did, they hit hard. As much as I enjoy the laughs, every once in a while he makes me cry. Not because he did something wrong, but because he did it right.
I particularly love how much he expanded the world when he made the AI characters more than just background pieces and this strip is one of the reasons why. I’m looking forward to re-reading the introduction of Claire knowing where that goes ( )!
Just got to that in my reread! The “library interns” part where just knowing what was going to be! “You will be The Librarian!” Binging it does hit differently, I really like that.
I have to admit, I am nervous about posting this comic, because including a trans person in my cast is something I have wanted to do for years and I really, really want to do a good job of it. One of the major themes of QC, I think, is of inclusion, and this seemed like a pretty important thing to include. I have given it a lot of thought and done a lot of research, so hopefully I won’t screw up. I’ll do my best, anyway.
Since “adding” a trans kid to my family, I feel this deeply. I hope I don’t screw it up too badly…
Anyway, I really like this comic, probably not for everybody, but it’s good IMHO.
I remember that newspost well – I sent him email about thanking him for how he writes her! I obviously can’t speak from the POV of your kid, but I know I consider you an ally and think that you’ll do fine. No one is perfect, but I think that even when you do “screw up” you’ll correct course with grace and aplomb. Thank you for being there for your kid and really for the rest of us too. We need more cis people like you!
