Your guess is as good as mine, but it’s soft power, and they’ve spent loads in Africa for similar rights, I certainly think it’s feasible.
China has assets in Ukraine and Belt and Road ambitions so I guess it is not out of the question, but dropping Russia in order to gain access also seems unlikely.

Maxar has cut off satellite imagery access to Ukraine, undoubtedly due to pressure from the U.S. government.
This means that not just classified, but commercially available unclassified intelligence products are being cut off.
I now fully expect Starlink to be next.

Of course it’s easier to deal with Russia. They want the same thing he does – the war to end with a Russian victory as soon as possible. In fact it seems like they’re the only country he finds easy to deal with for some reason.
