Wow. I couldn’t imagine living creatures in the middle of winter. Thanks for sharing.
The snow & cold makes it harder for the birdies to find food and water, so my feeders are suddenly very popular.
I do feed them all winter long, and they have a heated water fountain for drinking.
Is it in Europe? This bird travels a lot.
Racking up the bonus miles!
In addition to the usual suspects, I get wrens (& pileated woodpeckers) at the feeder in winter - the wrens hang around the yard all year, pissed off about something or other, but winter’s the only time I see them at the feeder. Which reminds me, I need to refill the feeder now that we’re home again.
was out doing some work behind the workshop, moving some old pallets leaning against the back fence, when i spotted a nest of little tokay geckos and what appears to be their little “nursery”. one large and at least six small lizards and a cluster of eggs, some seeming to have hatched:
i know that they are invasive, but i think lizards are cool, and i won’t mess with them. i have known they lived back there for years, but i have yet to see that many in one spot.
funny… i was just mentioning that these guys eat palmetto bugs in another thread, so i am cool with that, too.
This trio of jays has been by at least three times today to visit the water. When I refilled it a couple hours ago, I used hot (not boiling) water in the hope it might stay a bit warmer than the air for a while (between 28 and 46 degrees fahrenheit today).
The cat is very interested!
I haven’t been filling the feeder because a squirrel took up residence in our attic and I was trying to make our house inhospitable until it found a new home. We’ve had things sealed up for a while now though (over 6 months) and I’ve only seen a squirrel flying off the roof once. We trimmed the only branch he could have been using to get up there. Maybe I can feed the cold birbs now?
Probably took up residence next door. They have a huge bush-tree growing right up against the house . We’ll be trimming the branches that are crossing over to our property this winter. We are guessing that’s how it got onto our roof again.
