The wild animals that live among us

Can we Yankistanis get Sasquatch funding to surreptitiously study our forests?!

Great minds, etc, Baby!

Hmm; well there’s always jackalopes’ and chupacabras’ habitats to investigate! Any other cryptids in threatened areas? Wendigo?

Yeah, gotta get that arctic cryptid funding!

There is a documentary:

Ah, the Himalayas! They want studying, too!

There is a state-side equivalent.

Yeah, plenty of cryptids.

More mundane, alas, than cryptids or Trochilidae, but anyway, here are dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis).
These only show up here for the winter, so they’ll be gone in a couple of weeks until Oct. or Nov.

And while we’re at it, here’s the year-round denizen (again), black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) or possibly Carolina (P. carolinensis) chickadee

(Best I could do from that far away)

I love juncos and chickadee-dee-dees!

I learned how chickadees say “Fuck” one morning a number of years ago. I was broadcasting seed off the back porch, and didn’t see a dee-dee-dee who was hanging around. A cloud of summa the seed squarely hit them, and they reacted by flying straight up in the air while making a very angry-sounding buzzing noise. I profusely apologized, and still hope they wound up getting plenty of the offending seed.

Are they really though? Cryptids are stories people tell each other, and so ultimately only about ourselves. Even a relatively ordinary bird like a junco is a real living thing with its own world apart from us. It’s possible there are surprises about how they see and interpret things that no human yet knows.

Ah! Well, thx for that!

More of the chickadee, but this time without the phone’s inner Deckard yelling “enhance!!”

I hear that more often from the tufted titmice, which aren’t hanging around as much today. Wait! There’s one now:

I think I heard the pileated woodpecker(s?) earlier, & my daughter reported seeing something “big” go by, but no visual yet.

There’s a whole bunch of short videos of people cleaning barnacles off of whales; it almost looks like there is special equipment for it. This whale is certainly sticking around for the process, so it must not mind it, or actively enjoys it. ETA; welp, looks like I’ve been taken in by AI, folks. So enjoy this as an aspirational video.

A buncha the comments say it’s ai :frowning:

Awww; too bad! It looks real to me. Should I delete the comment, do you think?

I dunno! I tried asking Gogol about it and got nothing definite. :face_with_spiral_eyes: :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Because google is also largely AI now, and doesn’t even know what lying is any more, to know whether it’s doing it or not.

Lotsa reddit posts came up, and true to Gogol’s usual form, nothing about the vid was mentioned in the reddit stuff on the “results” page.

As a possible replacement, enjoy a non-AI cow brush.
