Last week I moved this tree because it had self-sprouted in a raised planter area and I canā€™t bring myself to kill trees these days. Kind of tough going because there was no room to work due to the other things around it. There were all kinds of roots, some very thick, from other plants that had lived in that spot in the past and from growing up into that space from beneath. And it was after dark because I was rushing to finish on the last warm day of the year, with rain and freezing weather coming the next day.

The root ball ended up smaller than I wanted because the soil was crumbly and a lot fell away. Next time: burlap. Anyway, my young green friend now has a new home in the front yard, not far from another tree of the same kind (tulip poplar) who can hopefully teach it some tricks. Maybe theyā€™ll form a community.

The one tree (maybe officially a shrub) Iā€™m not afraid of ripping out is redbud because they are prolific af. That whole raised planter was full of them, maybe 80 of them in various stages, which I had to dig out to rehab that space. There are three mature redbud along the fence, and the undersides of all the branches are frilled with their dark seed pods. Thereā€™ll be no shortage of replacements next year.

Yup, it snowed a little last night here, too. Just the right amount: looks pretty for a bit, but immediately melts on the concrete so thereā€™s no shoveling to do and itā€™s reasonably safe to drive.

Tell that to the folks who are driving and see it on the grass, etc. and start freaking out. Itā€™s like some sort of amnesia - they forget it happens every year, though this is kind of early even for us. My b-dayā€™s the 15th and I used to wish SO HARD for snow on my b-day when I was a kidā€¦but then again, all I had to do then was PLAY in it, shovelling and driving came later, lol.

I am thinking of flooding the backyard for an ice rink, thoughā€¦

Allegedly, according to ā€œThe Birthmate Bookā€, Methuselah was born on that day. We also have Ed Asner and Sam Waterston. And my personal favorite - Georgia Oā€™Keeffe!

Osage oranges filling the greenway path. Iā€™m glad I didnā€™t run into those in the dark. I couldnā€™t figure out where they came from. Maybe they rolled.

still no replacement for that bar?

Nah, not yet. I either need to get to the co-op or order a bunch of stuff. The co-op is super-cheap as you know but itā€™s 3.5 hours away in Chattanooga and Iā€™m pretty busy. Also, CO2. My podunk hicksville farm town doesnā€™t have a co-op, a real shame.

looks like they got a helluva greenway path.
minus the mock oranges, of course.

This is my late dadā€™s/late momā€™s room (theyā€™d slept in separate bedrooms since the summer of 1974):

Iā€™d love to clean it up some more - YES, MORE, lol - but I either see stuff and start crying and get out of there, or I start looking at stuff closely, reading it, et al.

If anyone here needs a place to stay, youā€™re welcome to come here and help me make it inhabitable.

On some levels, when my mom burned the house down, it really simplified sorting out things.

Especially since the majority of the ā€œheirloomsā€ were in rooms that were completely wiped out.

I know that feeling. I need to start clearing out a lot of my mother and fatherā€™s things, and I just canā€™t bring myself to do it yet. It would make life so much easier for meā€¦ but I get bogged down in memories or start crying.

(And yeah, my homeā€™s got that knotty pine paneling too, only here itā€™s a more medium brown shade. I want to eventually get rid of it in the living room, but Iā€™m not sure how to replace it or with what. Iā€™m going to learn many home fix-it skills in the next few yearsā€¦ fortunately I have an aunt whoā€™s an expert and is more than willing to help when that time comes!)

I know we were discussing it, but until things get better, Iā€™m stuck here in TJ.

I STILL havenā€™t received my replacement debit cards, and itā€™s been close to a month now.
