That is precisely what happened to Ashley Diamond here in GA

I used to know her back in the day. I was heart broken to hear what happened to her while she was serving time and was glad she was able to get some compensation for what happened to her. But she’s sadly fallen off the map since all this happened to her. I think about her a lot
 I hope she’s okay.

You really want to know how to handle that situation? Process them anyway, as the person applied. Shrugging and saying “well, I guess this is the law now” is the first step towards “I was just following orders.”

Why does a gender need to be on a passport at all?

One of the replies to that thread was from a manager saying they’re not “piling up” because there are relatively few, and that it’s not chaotic but morale is really bad. But the mood maybe different different processing centers – in one of them employees were asked to stop displaying pride flags, in another they weren’t.

I still don’t know what’s going with my application. It still says “in process” as it did Tuesday night; it doesn’t say it’s on hold. That doesn’t mean it’s not.

I have been checking the online DS-11 form daily, and yesterday it still hadn’t changed, but today it has. It’s now simply “Sex: M/F”

In 2020 there was a court case where an intersex person said they couldn’t choose either M or F because that would be perjury. Lambda Legal took it up and won a court order saying the State Department has to issue a passport with “X” for them. In 2022 the Biden Administration said “let’s make this easier and change it from sex to gender, allow X, and ask no questions about it.” Now I wish they’d said “let’s just remove the Sex field because it’s universally unproductive.”

But it’s likely there’ll be more such court orders in the future. Court orders supercede executive orders

Yeah, that’s what I’d like to know.

Well, passports, drivers licenses, etc,
these are all technologies of control favored by the nation-state. They are generally speaking there is surveil and control populations (and denote inclusion and exclusion)
And given the connections with stuff like nationalism/national identity, they are meant to enforce particular norms on that nation (heteronormativity, cisgenderness, etc). Hence, you got to know who has the “large reproductive cell” (and as such, as diminished rights) and who has the “small reproductive cell” (and as such as greater rights).

The postwar human rights regime sought to keep these technologies of control, but reconfigure them into denoting rights for people rather than limitations (so, inclusion is more standard and widespread, and exclusion is more frowned upon, though STILL a key part of the modern state). The people who are keen to roll back that human rights regime to prewar understanding (more exclusion, less inclusion) want to roll back all those gains we’ve made since the war, and to fundamentally erase human rights as a universal goal of modern states and international institutions.

That’s my thought on it, anyway. I think this shows just how two-edged all these institutional structures that have become so naturalized are
rule of law (including things like identity documents) can help organize a society and even be employed to protect our rights
but they can and often are just as easily used to control and oppress us. Maybe it’s part of that fundamental contradiction of the capitalist system (which I’d be inclined to agree with), I don’t know, but I think it’s certainly a contradiction that we never fully wrestled with on a large scale, at least not widely among the general population. Certainly, lots of academics have addressed and thought hard about these issues, but who listens to a bunch of stuffy academics, when you can tune into Joe Rogan pretending like his stoned ramblings are actual “deep thoughts”

Anyway
that’s my intellectual wanking for today!

And because it’s being done to incarcerated individuals, it’s going to go un- (or under-) reported. :frowning:

“ Trump in his order Monday claimed that troops who identify as a gender other than their biological one “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life.” He said that was harmful to military readiness and, due to that, required a revised policy to address the matter.”
