At least we don’t have bone spurs.
Ok, I just got caught up after a few weeks of not following this thread. I think I need to go back to not reading this thread. The stories of trans women in male prisons, especially, scares the shit out of me. Back when I still drank, about 20 years ago now, and before I transitioned, I got arrested one night, and I was presenting as a woman at the time. I got put in the male jail in Oklahoma County (Oklahoma City), and ended up there for 3 days. I got lucky. I got put in a cell with two young men, one of whom was 100% focused on getting out of jail and nothing else, while the other was so homophobic he seemed to think he would catch the gay from me if he breathed the same air, but wasn’t interested in doing anything violent. But people talked. I heard them talk. And the way one of the other inmates looked at me still haunts me to this day. It was the way a predator looks at prey. Again, I got lucky. Nothing other than being scared happened to me.
I sincerely hope the courts can shut this down, as they have done before, on the grounds that it’s cruel and puts prisoners at risk.
It is incredibly shameful that prisons can’t protect inmates better in general.
Oh they can. They choose not to. It’s a deliberate choice. Prison conditions are seen as part of the punishment. “Criminals,” to them, are less than human and deserve all the misery they get.
Yeah, I should have said “don’t” rather than “can’t.”
Not to mention the fact that protecting inmates would, you know, cost money, and we can’t possibly have that now, can we?
(/s)
It really doesn’t cost money, though. Housing trans inmates with the correct population is cost neutral. And initiatives to protect inmates also protect employees, making a safer and less stressful work environment, and less burnout/turnover. I don’t know about everywhere else, but my state is in the midst of a prison staffing crisis.
Yeah, I saw the /s tag, but just felt like it was worth saying out loud.
“This employee took screenshots of ABK wide discussions about the safety of our protected information (like name changes and visa statuses) and sent them to an an extremely racist, sexist, and transphobic individual on Twitter who has over a 100 thousand followers”

ETA: Trans Woman denied a passport under any gender. Documents confiscated.
Yesterday, a Los Angeles passport agency refused to issue a passport renewal to a trans woman. The agency kept all of her documents, did not issue her a passport, and threatened to arrest her.
At first, the agency told her that they could only issue her a “male” passport. All of her documents (federal and state) are updated to “female.” After she agreed to accept the “male” passport, the agency rescinded this option and told her that they will not be issuing her ANY passport.
They proceeded to keep all of her documents. She was told she would be arrested if she did not stop asking clarifying questions and immediately leave the office.
She left under threat of arrest. She is now without a passport and all of the documentation she had with her to renew her passport.
She is in need of legal experts.
