I honestly do not know how to feel about yet another extension. From a EU27 perspective time is not really an issue and a better outcome would certainly be worth a little delay. But at this point I just don’t see how anything short of a remainer landslide would make a difference.
Another one leaves.
So apparently the UK’s Conservatives have more backbone than the Republicans in the US.
I think that it’s a parliamentary system helps. In theory any of them could become PM. Makes for a certain democratic volatility which keeps everyone on their toes a little. Or, at least, it should. If everyone just “plays their part” it doesn’t help at all.
Generally, no. But for individual businesses, it matters a whole lot. My lab has been in a state of suspension since May. A quarter of our business comes from across the channel. Between Corp oversight and local business decisions, it’s reaching a critical point. I have open positions and I can’t hire until I know there will be work for them.
Well that wasn’t unexpected.
… So Johnson’s solution is to cede Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland.
I admit, I knew that was one of the four options — stay in the EU customs union (backstop), cede NI (customs border between NI and GB), a return to the Troubles (customs border between NI and RoI), or annexation (customs border between RoI and EU) — but I hadn’t thought it was a leading one.
Even Donald Tusk and Michel Barnier are at the same point as the rest of us: “just end it already.”
I don’t think this has much of a chance of making it through Parliament. I hope I’m wrong, because I really want this done and over with.
That’s what the no-dealers are counting on.
Dza dza is better than wa wa… and better than no deal.
He and Farage got the same treatment. Watcha get if ya don’t show up. It’s Channel 4 for fucks sake.
… UK would ever have a meaningful vote again if the Conservatives got another four years in power.
“I am an anarchist,” Moore said in a video posted Wednesday to the Northampton South Labour Party’s Twitter account. “But the reason that I will be voting Labour in this election is that I am convinced that if we have another four years of these monstrous, rapacious Tories, we may not have another meaningful vote upon anything.”
“I think the stakes are that high. Go out and do your best,” said Moore.
On the other side of the sea, I’m so sorry.
So it happened. The voters of the UK are perfectly fine with burning their country to ground as long as the immigrants are kept out.
I would also extend some blame towards Jeremy Corbyn.
Going to be interesting. The SNP has taken Scotland handily, to the point where they have the 3rd largest number of seats in Parliament. Might not be a United Kingdom much longer.
