This goes without saying, but just ask first. Not all dogs are trusting of people they don’t know yet. I have one such dog. Attempting to pet him before he knows you well would not end well, sadly. My other dog, though…pet away. He already thinks you’re his best friend even though he doesn’t know you exist. He thinks everyone is his best friend. I have two dogs on the opposite ends of the spectrum of trustiness.

Yeah, a friend has an Aussie who is deaf (common problem for the breed) and we often walk him together because it’s fun for us to have a nice conversation on a walk and also it helps to have extra defense for when people walk up (often from the side) and try to pet him.
