Like most 15 year olds, and those of us who are permanently 15, I very much enjoy good demolition videos.

Watched this one not long ago

The last arena shown is the palace of Auburn Hills. It’s a suburb well NW of Detroit. A strange stadium occurrance in Pontiac (an hour NW of Detroit) sprang to mind.

I was reminded of the failed first attempt at bringing down the Pontiac silverdome in 2017

Such perfect Detroit understatement in the single sentence what comprises the entirety of the description

“Although the Pontiac Silverdome was scheduled to implode, the stadium is still standing.”

The Guardian’s video of the failed demo includes this in the description:

“Demolition company Adamo said 10% of the charges failed to go off and the building should fall on its own – it’s just unclear when that will happen.”

Dude WTF

what the hell is wrong with you tyler perry-275x2275

They decided to give it another go (Attaway, chaps!) (/Turns away, smile dissolves Sotto voce: Oh, FFS! /rolleyes) next day, which was mighty generous of them, don’t you agree?

That time it actually worked!

The description includes this

"‘We had a lot of difficulty getting people out of here the other night…we don’t know if someone accidentally pulled the wire off. We don’t know, we’re still researching that,’ said Adamo Executive Vice President Rick Cuppetilli. Crews will be monitoring the dome and will send off suggestions to the mayor’s office today. We’re told security will be on the site around the clock until the Silverdome comes down.

what-took-you-so-long

They said some boomy things didn’t b/c they let civilians onto the demolition site, and they tweaked the fuses?! So-called security left the joint unguarded, and/or were so understaffed, it was unsecured.

“Our incompetence at the job we were hired to do? Um, y’see, well, uh, it’s because we’re good at incompetence. We make use of it in other aspects of the job, too, like, uh, staffing, and uh, yeah…we apply it in security, too, yeah…”

I was happy to see the palace included in this, and the knowledge that Auburn Hills, or whoever was footin’ the bill, had learnt a lesson from Pontiac. They wanted someone good, someone who’d do a proper job of it, so they didn’t hire those adamo schmoes!

If you like watching the removal of pesky natural obstacles the boom part starts at about 7:10.

Doesn’t even look like that worked particularly well, either. It must have really sucked to be downwind of that debris cloud.

I was of course familiar with the Pontiac Silverdome from its hosting of Wrestlemania III, but the venue’s Wikipedia article really drove home the ongoing sad state of sportsball venues in the Detroit area.

Meh, it’s the old/abandoned venues. Two of which were nowhere near Detroit. The Palace was OK for hockey games, but sucked as a music venue. Silverdome wasn’t good for much of anything other than American Handegg.

Tiger Stadium did sit vacant for a number of years, but the site is still a baseball facility. Detroit PD runs youth baseball programs in the pared-down stadium. Lots of redevelopment has happened around it in the years since PD took it over. Kind of a success story, overall.

Joe Lewis kinda sucked as a hockey arena, and was torn down after Little Ceasar’s opened. The site is under construction, mixed-use I think I heard? Sadly the old parking garage is being torn down, soon the “tubes” connecting the structure to Cobo and Joe Lewis will only exist in the original Robocop movie. :frowning:

The new stadiums (Comerica, Ford Field and Little Ceasars) are all nice and big steps up from the old venues. Even when our sportsballers are sucking, attendance is quite good. :woman_shrugging:

Dear Penthouse Forum, I never thought it would happen to me, but one summer I was working on the city’s road repair crew. The hours were long and hot …
