Never heard that phrase before, and can’t find it with a quick search: what is a watermelon tabby? Is it what I would know as a mackerel tabby?

Watermelons are what mom called tabbies of any color who have the broad, swirly stripes - the ones who look more like a painting of a tabby than the tiger-striped variety.
Apparently tabbies began as watermelons, but the tiger-y ones became more popular.
