The city picks it up weekly. I imagine the aluminum, steel, and paper/cardboard stuff is recycled, but I don’t know how good they are dealing with plastic. I’ve read that country-wide (world-wide?) only 10% of plastic waste is recycled. I think plastic recycling is mostly propaganda from the oil companies.

You could. But those stories usually end up here:

And of course reporters are itching to blame trans people :disappointed:

That is an amazingly responsible and reasonable answer to a stupid question.

Can’t believe Mastriano posted a link to that article and didn’t point out that TIE Fighters are manned, not drones. Pretty much standard for the GQP, of course. Idiots.

The changes mean that 24-hour services will no longer be available for primary healthcare in many localities around the country, including Iisalmi, Varkaus, Jämsä and Raahe.

In addition, the 24-hour provision of primary care and specialised care, as well as the round-the-clock availability of operating rooms, will be discontinued in Savonlinna, Kemi, Oulainen and Salo.

According to the government’s estimates, the cutbacks will save the state budget about 27 million euros from 2026 onwards.

Tonight I got this email Canada Post:

Your Mail Forwarding service will expire on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

For the past few months, the Mail Forwarding service has given you the peace of mind of knowing that you’re not missing any of your mail—enabling you to focus on the task of moving and settling into your new home.

I did pay for that forwarding.

There’s been a strike for the last month until today, and I’ve been waiting on some very key items. Damn that’s cold timing! Not the workers fault. As everywhere, Canada needs to work out what the post office now does and how they get paid. Maybe something Moist needs to happen?

eta: Wait. The Post Office is telling me this by email? We’re hosed!

eta2: Can anyone suggest an email company that just wants to serve email and make a reasonable profit, and not billionaire fantasies? The thought of how much of my official life is now hooked through Google is very disturbing. (Except for stuff that still goes to the Hotmail account predates Microsoft buying them.)

Ouch. That is way too true…

I’ve been feeling the same way of late about GMail. I’ve been there from its early days and I’m a bit tired of it and the data mining they do.

I have accounts on HostPapa and Teksavvy, who host my biz website and are my ISP. Both work OK, if you are fine with a webmail front end like RoundCube. or use POP. I don’t like having my business email hosted in a foreign country.

A couple of my friends swear by Proton. It’s :switzerland:, so subject to their fairly strict privacy laws.

Edit: And here’s a case of Google’s Forms, AI and Account recovery being exploited by criminals:

Ugh. I feel ya. I’ve been experimenting with the free level of Proton. Good so far

I’ll be checking back here for more email suggestions. Cleaning up all my “freemail” accounts will take a lot of time! You reminded me that I haven’t worked out a good solution for snail mail yet. A lot of the firms recommended for snowbirds and digital nomads have taken a sudden turn for the worse (with eye-popping complaints about delays for months and items going missing) filed in the past year.

Not sure what’s going on in that space - change of ownership, fraud/crime, or general enshittification of firms that have been around for decades. Now I shudder to think what more might happen to the US Postal Service. :grimacing:
