I think that was the plot of the episode Bob’s Father.

Philip Larkin would see it differently.

I was literally told this by my mother when I was talking about being beaten by my dad. “You never knew your grandpa. He was so much worse!”

Yep, i got it from both Mom and Dad, if not in such precise wording.

What I posted did indeed bring that poem to mind. I’m not sure the two disagree all that much; one is about what parents say, the other about what they do.

Note to self: leave some fig newtons outside for the friendly neighborhood opossum.

Not really new in VA. We have had very occasional cases of babesiosis for years, but it certainly is increasing in frequency. North American malaria, gotta love it, right?

I hope a raccoon doesn’t get there first!

Wow, didn’t know that. I spend a lot of time outside but am very observant on checking for ticks.

The raccoons stop by between 10 and 1 pm. A fox stops by on the hour and a possum does a final sweep around 3 am according to my backyard-mounted trail camera.

I do presume my grandparents were fucked up by the wars. Dad’s parents died before I have memories but I think having shrapnel in your back won’t make anybody really mellow. Only war story I ever heard from my mom’s dad was about how far a person can run without a head… He told it like it had been going to the market to buy some fish I don’t think he ever mentioned that it during a war.

… From 1970 to 2017, there was only one significant earthquake in the region. In 2018, there were 50. Last year, there were 1,000.
