Well this is interesting

I thought I was the only person this happened to.

Note: it seems to be a truth that whenever you think you are the only person something happens to, it turns out to be common, but when you think “everyone can do this”, it turns out to be rare and weird.

Recently saw Season 1, Episode 5 From Deserts to Grasslands of Netflix’s “Our Planet” series. I like the Attenborough documentaries because they tend to stress the idea of a range, and seasonal migration.

So much of the identity of some of these species is tied up in a migratory existence. What’s the point in exhibiting elephants if their societal structure is rendered moot?

I wonder what would happen if they just released herds of elephants on the plains. I mean horses have done fairly well. That said, the Indian elephants are closer to mammoths, and neither is close to mastodons.

I believe the king of Siam offered a gift of elelphants in the 1860s, but vast herds did not come of it.

I think at least part of the problem would be how they’d disrupt (an already disrupted) ecosystem.

Though I’d love to drive out west to see herds of elephants on the plains!

The great plains are used for intensive agriculture, roads, and human settlement. You could argue that many open spaces of outstanding natural beauty are the legacy of imperialist landowners driving out people in favor of sheep, or game, and thus the obstacles can be overcome.

I hope those were good experiences. :open_mouth:

And a lot of severely eroded landscapes are the result of imperialist landowners farming better land with cash crops with poor erosion management, and driving poorer people to farm marginal land with more vulnerability… or ranching any kind of land with sheep.

Also changing rainfall patterns.

It’s hard to say how much losing the largest magafauna have screwed up American ecosystems. But I think reintroducing close relatives would tend to improve rather than degrade it.

I’ve led such a boring life. Now EtOH, that’s another story, but it interferes with a prescription drug, so not anymore. :frowning: Not that I’d necessarily want to get shitfaced again but it is a social kind of thing . . .

There seems to be a recurring theme here (but the lads are funny about it):

funny even for a lay- person like me.
their cold reading or however it would be termed was still fairly impressive, but yes, the young lady is obviously on another level.

glasses guy seems to be from Liverpool? his entire demeanor seems to be channeling Ringo Star.

In a number of Trey the Explainer’s videos, he has to explain that a supposed supernatural creature is probably just an owl.

This time, he has to explain that a supposed owl is probably a supernatural creature from near and middle eastern mythology.

Unfortunately these derails a lot of the more interesting interpretations of Genesis, feminist reclamation of Lilith, etc.

What it’s like to be an airport baggage handler, with special additional discussion for people traveling and using wheelchairs.

I saw this because a woman on Twitter was talking about having her very expensive chair crunched after specifically telling a baggage handler/gate attendant it doesn’t fold.
