Wait. All the factors they mention for the Grand Masters – the stress, the sitting for a long time, the focus, and so on – are the things which are supposed to be making office workers gain weight.
That might just be the difference between chronic and acute stress though.
Meanwhile, players also eat less during tournaments, simply because they don’t have the time or the appetite. “The simple explanation is when they’re thinking about chess, they’re not thinking about food,” says Ewan C. McNay, assistant professor of psychology in the behavioral neuroscience program at the University of Albany.
And this is why I’m getting fat. I stress hard when I’m painting, and all my food is within arm’s reach.
Sounds like a normal day at work for me. I grab a snack for breakfast around lunchtime and don’t eat a real meal til dinner. Not really healthy tho, I should work on that.
I finally found out who’s been doing the murals of people all over the south side! Some are of famous people, so of course those made sense, but I was also seeing “normal” people being represented (they use the example of “Black Girl Magic” in the article) and didn’t know what was going on:
I found the accompanying podcast disappointing-- not for the content, but because it was recorded at a very low level, and the excerpts seemed to have less dynamics than the original recordings.
It’s a combination of European traditions which serve the specious belief that whiteness has a culture—one that is superior to all others.
And I decided to stop reading at the first part of that sentence. The second part I actually agree with – classical music still clings to old empires and supremacy.
But I have noticed that BIPOC who criticise white supremacy often assume that what you see in the mainstream media, that super-pablum of mass produced this and that, is authentic European culture.
And it isn’t. There’s all sorts of stuff being practised, quietly, because a) it has not yet been monetized and therefore has been coded as “weird” and b) doesn’t really have the supremacist component, mostly because it’s often very local. And I suppose c) as a consequence of a) tends to be working class and therefore never gets to be classical.
I don’t think people of most backgrounds really comprehend how many people white supremacy truly excludes.
I read half the article then gave up. How can music be abusive? I thought it was above such things, but maybe I’m listening to it wrong. Somebody, please educate me.
Given that I have the nasty habit of rolling my eyes when “cultural appropriation” is invoked, I’m definitely the wrong person to ask. Also, I like the dead stuff. Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, a little Beethoven. Though I recently acquired a Prokofiev recording and it was thrilling.
I took Russian Music 347. The points in the article are supported by Russia’s classical music history. It was very easy to study the entire history of Russian classical music. It started when Peter the Great decided to have Russia join European society. So they ripped off a lot of stuff from the West, added some folksy flourishes, and ta da! Now they could sit at the big kids’ table.
There were amazing geniuses riffing off Russian folk themes. Ultimately, though, they saw the Classical music as superior to their own musical traditions. I like what they did with it, but I can get the point this author is making.
I’ve got an LP of Scott Joplin’s work that includes his opera, Treemonisha. I don’t like opera in general so I’m not surprised I don’t care for this either.
But “The Sting” spoiled me on the tempo of ragtime. The songs on the record are the correct tempo, but they seem too slow to me. I prefer uptempo music. Hmm, I could upload it, then do a frequency-preserving speedup . . .
I will describe it for you. Gymnast does her uneven bar routine, flips off into her dismount, does that arms overhead bow thing, meanwhile, behind her, the bars fall crashing, wobbling to the ground. She seems completely unaware.
