Well this is interesting

I posted about this at length at TOP but I’m more than happy to discuss again here.

As a huge fan of the The Beach Boys, I’ve been following this saga closely.

For those that don’t know, these days the group that tours as The Beach Boys are founding member Mike Love’s group. He’s got an exclusive license with the band’s corporation to use the name (he does tour with long time group member Bruce Johnston).

Brian Wilson tours under his own name with founding member Al Jardine and former member Blondie Chaplin but performs mostly BB material.

Yes, it’s a confusing mess. The history of the band and family dynamic between the Wilsons and cousin Mike is so unbelievable that a Hollywood scriptwriter would say, “nah that’s just not plausible enough”. (Example: Dennis Wilson married and had a child with Mike’s illegitimate daughter as payback for Mike taking out a restraining order on Dennis after they had a fistfight during a live show. Like sands through the hourglass…)

Unsurprisingly, Mike and his group performed the show. He could left it at that, but the subsequent message from his fan club president is some next level Trumpian bullshit (not surprising as Mike Love is a Trump supporter):

Of note:

Mike’s appearance performing at the SCI Convention is just that - a performance. The only message that he is sending is one of positivity and love. If people want to take this opportunity to gaslight others instead of focusing on the unifying message of the music, then all one can feel for them is sad.

Gotta love that, “if you don’t like it, you’re just a snowflake”. Never mind the other two surviving founding members of the group with nothing to gain from a boycott spoke out against this.

His people could have just said, “as is standard in the industry, the band was contracted to do a private gig that paid good money and they were happy to oblige; the group does not endorse the organization or its beliefs.” It still would have been icky, but folks would have largely forgotten about it and moved on. In typical Trumpian fashion he chose to double down on the whole thing in the worst way possible.

Mike Love gets a lot of shit, and in all honesty a lot of it is undeserved. But he just makes it so damn easy to hate him with his absolutely uncompromising arrogance and unlimited capacity for assholery, and this is no exception. Even when he’s in the right, he’s such an insufferable and unrepentant asshole about everything that it just overshadows everything else. His infamous “don’t fuck with the formula” quote is actually making a reasonable statement, but in the context of everything else that was going on it just makes him look like the jerk that’s stifling Brian Wilson’s genius.

I just find it amazing that they’re still going. My parents listened to them growing up; I used to dance around to their 8-track tapes when I was a wee little lad. The thought that I could actually take my grandson to one of their concerts is kinda mind-blowing. They were already old when I was a child.

For band splits though, it’s not that unusual. One of the bands I liked, I think it was Faster Pussycat, not only split, but toured separately but at the same time, with both bands playing under the same name (and claiming rights to it), but rather different styles. So you wouldn’t know what to expect if you went to one of their shows. I think they eventually worked it out, but for some years there were two different bands with the same name touring and playing rather different music, competing against each other.

I can’t really imagine what that’s like. A band at their height is as tight as married, and when they want to go in different directions that just shakes the foundations of it all. That some can just keep on doing it for generations after generations is really impressive.

Same thing happened to Deforest Kelly.

Oh fuck. Night of the Lupus.

In other news…

Shouldn’t that be “Details Dribble In” given the low bit rate?
Another great headline: “It’s not just a space potato.”

Actually, hares are of the genus Lepus, whereas Lupus is the wolf species. And the autoimmune disease. But I quibble.

But the only reason I’m contributing this is that your statement got me to looking into rabbits and hares and whatnot. I found it rather hilarious that rabbits include a genera Bunolagus. Alas, that one’s endangered.

I don’t want none unless you’ve got buns, hun.

If we hew just a little more closely to the original lyrics,

My anaconda don’t want none
Unless you’ve got buns, hun.

then Sir Mix-a-lot’s paean to prodigious posteriors becomes a slightly more sedate tale of a pet store experiencing supply chain woes such that they must send out “Bun alerts” when their stock of live feeder animals is replenished, and the conversation that then ensues between a store clerk and one of their customers with an (ahem) unusually large snake who has to reiterate that the typical pinkie mice are not going to satisfy their particular pet.

See the changelog on the Wikipedia page EDIT Well I just noticed the person who posted at BB has the same name as the person who made the change at Wikipedia, so, not an independent source. This might be a never mind.

I can’t speak to whether or not Cory left, but that gentleperson is nothing but a troll. They’ve been stirring up trouble, poking and prodding at how things work, who’s in charge, and arrogantly announcing their opinion as if it was gospel Truth. With any luck, they’ll be banned soon… I wouldn’t trust them if they told me it was February (and they’d say it as condescendingly as possible, too.)

I might just be a little biased, though.

(Someone at TOS mentioned Cory was involved with his book’s adaptation, so he might be too busy for Boing Boing right now.)

(Edit to take out name, so if they Google themselves they won’t find us.)

That would be me. He moved to the USA mostly because of he was to be about for the movie production of Little Brother.
It is still in production so who knows how much is is involved. Also Cory’s last post was Feb 4th which is hardly a long absence unless you want to use ‘internet time’.

Ah, thank you! I should’ve done a thread search so I could cite you, but I got a mite upset.
