But without Kansas and Nebraska, the War of the Slave Power would have come at some other time, under other circumstances, and it’s unlikely there would be a West Virginia.

I remember a lot of this from Anthro class in the '90s.

Still, it’s fairly obscure outside Anthro. For example, Paul Bairoch commented that there were no cities north of Mexico, on pages 68 to 69.

I hope that study of the traditions of the neighboring peoples, such as the Ho-Chunk, could shed light on the religions and world views of the Mississippian peoples, if not their history.
