Well this is interesting

I could do so much with XP, a friend who was teaching computer classes would ask me, “How’d ya get it to do that?!” whenever he sat next to me at the machine. I’d go into settings and preferences and show him. Sometimes he’d ask me to make screengrabs & email 'em to him.

Same with the browsers I used. “You can do that?!” I’d go into settings and show him, and he was amazed. “Send me that shit, too, wouldja?”

With each passing “upgrade,” more and more customization options simply disappear. It’s absolutely infuriating.

I was still running some version of Firefox 3 - to be fair, I was using an archaic retired school laptop - when there was a biiiig problem at tumblr, and I updated FF. Like many people still using 3, I was appalled by the proliferation of adverts, text block garbage, sudden unwanted musical interludes, slide-ins, etc etc, and most of the extensions that had saved me from that crap were gone.

Fellow tumblr users made sympathetic memes for us. “People who were running Firefox 3+ four days ago be like”

I used to use custom firefox css, but those would break with updates. I then switched to some different browsers for a few years that weren’t customizable. I’m back on firefox now but haven’t tried any custom CSS. I did however go into the about:config settings and customize my tab behavior.

Here are some FF extensions whomst I use, and most likely to appeal to a wide variety of weird Elsewherians.

Book Finder
“Add links to other bookstores on Amazon product pages.”

Bookmark Dupes
Helps find and delete duplicate bookmarks.

Close Tab History Button
Click the icon, and a smol drop down menu shows you the last ten tabs you’ve closed.

De-Troll YouTube - Hide Unwanted Commenters
Puts a cute little trashcan icon near all usernames, and when it’s clicked, you’ll never see their stupid names, avatars, nor comments ever again!
{Just reload the page if the trashcans are absent}

Disable Youtube comments
“Protect your sanity by disabling comments on any youtube video.” OMG so helpful.

FoxyTab
A host of tab-related goodies in a lickle drop down menu. I most frequently avail meself of the
Copy ⇨ Tab Title {!!!}
and
Copy ⇨ Tab URL
features.

Kill Infinite Scroll
Does what it says on the tin at lotsa websites.

Kill It
Rather limited scope, but often comes thru when other adblockers don’t.

Reload Skip Cache Button
The author, Button Guy, made all kindsa useful FF buttons for functions what FF lacked. He used to have a massive pkg of buttons, and you could pick out all the ones you wanted, and drop 'em on any menu bar. I’ve been using various buttons of his for decades.

Return YouTube Dislike
Doesn’t work only when vid creators disable the dislike function.

RYS — Remove YouTube Suggestions
The annoying right hand column is gone, also 65+ additional yt customization options.

Selective Bookmarks Export Tool
Ever wanna export not all yr bookmarks? Here’s yr helpful beast.

Stop All Button
Another good 'un from Button Guy. “Stop all tabs from loading when you have mass opened tabs and found the one you really wanted.” It’s only b0rked when FF is also b0rked, like if FF is frozen or crashing.

Tab List Button
Button Guy provides a list of every tab what you’ve got open.

Timer
“Stylish timer combined with stopwatch and alarm for your browser.” You can choose yr alarm noise from several good ones.

Tranquility Reader
Makes pages actually legible - removes all gobbledegook.

uBlacklist
“Blocks sites you specify from appearing in Google search results.” Never see those Asian pr0n or spam keyword sites again when asking Gogol for not those things. I love this one so much.

Unhook: Remove YouTube Recommended Videos Comments
“Hide YouTube related videos, comments, video suggestions wall, homepage recommendations, trending tab, and other distractions.” So very useful!
This updated version is not available to me b/c legacy FF, b/c yet again, archaic retired school laptop.

Hope someone finds these helpful.

I use a lot of about:config and css fixes. Not sure how to list them.

I don’t even remember everything I did, which wasn’t even a lot. I changed things gradually over a couple days when the need arrived.

“Downing Street said the expert advice on the risks of first-cousin marriage was clear but indicated that the government had no plans to change the law.”

I guess it’s not just for royals.

I thought the side effects were most associated with repeated marriages among the same few families, regardless whether they’re marrying 1st cousins or only ever marrying more distant cousins.

That’s why these things occur in royal families, isolated villages, and sometimes persecuted ethnic and religious groups.

And Poe, Darwin, Einstein, Queen Victoria (oops, a royal), a whole bunch of Rothschilds…

And Rudy Giuliani.

Poe as noted married his cousin when she was barely a teen half his age. Physicist Robert Hooke never married but did have an affair with a 16 year old niece he’d been looking after. Woody Allen married his stepdaughter. I don’t know if famous people are good guides. :frowning:

Can anyone guess which part of this story made me laugh out loud? Don’t unblur the answer until you’ve read the story. Trust me: For one, the calculation Willow was tasked to solve wasn’t really anything useful to anybody.

And the Hapsburgs… the whole lot of them, apparently.

Truly, but only insofar matters concerning things useful for anyone in our dimension. The multiverse is pranking Google.

Wow, TIL the way I never stopped looking at art is described like this:

And the “slow looking” movement comes across as pretty conservative—it’s excessively reverential and technophobic.

I’m not a technophobe. I just put my phone in my pocket when I’m trying to enjoy an event in person. Sure, museums can save money by ditching docents in favor of audioguides and QR codes. If I wanted that kind of input, I could access a virtual exhibit at home. :woman_shrugging:t5:

My targets fall more in the “organic” variety. Wink, wink.
