Well this is interesting

“The Rat Patrol” is where he got noticed. And his character on TY&TR was s’posed to be a one-time character - which turned into a 40-year gig!

You mean ape - no tails on them. And yes, it was EftPotA. Have you ever seen “The Ambulance”? And yes, that’s Eric Roberts with a mullet.

From the same man who gave us “Q the Winged Serpent”, Larry Cohen.

It’s an old joke about Planet of the Apes. Also, a bit of Buckaroo Bonzai.

I don’t blame you. That’s a very nice bag.

It really is! TBH, I had never actually seen one before. I coveted the idea of the NPR tote bag. It’s possible that Peter Sagal has an unhealthy influence over my deepest desires.

So, the fact that it seems like a really durable, functional bag is really just icing. I guess I’m just a guy that likes a good bag.

Kidding! That was awoken about 15 years ago when cool IT guy insisted I get a Crumpler bag for my work laptop. He let me keep the bag when the laptop was sold, and it’s still my daily driver, if I drive anywhere. Now I have two nice bags. Winning!

Sorry, IT guy, if you were trying to get in my good graces because you thought I was going places other than “two nice bags.” I mean, it didn’t make sense fiscally, and the finance director reminded me every chance… wait! were you setting me up?! I don’t care. I love this bag. And I love you, you crazy bastard.

FTA: A longstanding tradition allows watch standers to use poetry to log their ship’s activities in the wee hours of a new year.

A certain nuclear engineer of my acquaintance was working at a certain small Ontario Hydro nuclear plant on Christmas New Year’s Eve in the 70’s. There was a minor fuelling machine problem. Edit: fixed date.

The bored engineer filed the first draft of the mandatory report of this lowest-level incident as a poem. Think: a stone cold sober William Topaz McGonagall attempts “The Night Before Christmas” about a CANDU power plant.

The boss, although amused, said “um… no…”. In the end, beside the official report, the admin assistant was convinced to file the poem as a supplement “-A”.

This would have gone forgotten forever were it not for an enthusiastic reporter’s FOI request for nuclear incident reports some years later. The would-be McGonagall was brought to the attention of the CEO, who was not amused when asked what he thought of these reports being filed as poetry.

The engineer, now long retired, will be amused by this article… :slightly_smiling_face:

You’re probably aware of “The Gonagall” from Pratchett’s Wee Free Men? The bard and secret weapon of the Nac Mac Feegle, who is brought out in dire battles, with the warning to other clan members “Cover ye’re ears, lads; there’s gonnae be Poetry!”

I tried to find out, but Jalopnik wants me to navigate so much junk to keep reading more of the article that I gave up. :woman_shrugging:

The compound gets its red color from iron oxide, while the active firefighting ingredients all come with some pretty complex, and slightly scary sounding, names. Those compounds include ammonium polyphosphate, diammonium phosphate and diammonium sulfate, which can all help prevent trees and other woody materials from burning, according to the compound’s manufacturer Perimeter Solutions.

Yeah, after around 15 paragraphs and sundry embedded junk

I wonder if most places would require zoning approval for one of those. It seems like a good option for keeping close, yet independent, and for avoiding the risk and expense of even a halfway decent nursing home.

Here in Australia they can be a pretty good option. But people have been stung building one only to find that the permit situation is a lot more complicated than they thought. In Oz you can hire people who know the rules (much like an accountant knows the rules about tax) whose job title is “Town Planner”, and they could save you thousands. A friend is a Town Planner, and his war stories include clients coming to him after being stung by issues around

  • water and wastewater connection
  • electrical connection
  • amount of impermeable ground cover permitted on each lot

and many others besides.

The town council probably doesn’t want to open the floodgates on packing in too many people in an area zoned for low-density residential living, so expect some caution from them.

Having said all that: they can be a great option when they work.

we’re supposed to think calling it a “pod” makes it something different from the traditional mother-in-law’s apartment?

Good q. I wonder if “pod” was chosen because the unit is more portable than the usual backyard apartments, or is it simply marketing (sounds more personal and family-friendly than “apartment”)?

I took “pod” to mean just that it’s small. And no, not an “apartment,” at least not in US terms; that’s a living unit within a building full of them, usually 4 or more.

It might be portable, but I think it’s instead a standalone “detached” house. It looks a little bigger to me than those “tiny houses” that were popular and few years ago.
