Whatcha Watchin'?

This was one that was recommended to me by an algorithm and I thought, “Ok, high school Saturday detention Breakfast Club meets serial killer movie, only with rich snobby kids and one outcast normal kid? I know what to expect from that, so why not?”

It was quite a bit more fun than I expected. So many questions raised throughout the movie, and it kept you guessing right up until the very last minute. Every time you think you knew what to expect, nope. That thing that happened in the middle of the movie and then just wasn’t addressed again? Yeah, there’s a payoff eventually. Then it all came together at the end quite nicely.

Apparently it’s a sequel, so now I need to watch the first.

It has very mixed reviews. Maybe it’s a love it or hate it thing.

This wasn’t even on my radar, but noticed the trailer and decided to check it out. Looks pretty good, looking forward to watching it

Is there a movie recommend thread? I didn’t find one. Anyway, today I watched:

AKA: Sky TV rips off Bullet Train

Well guess what? I enjoyed it way more than Bullet Train! Josh > Brad in my book. It was consistently funny, inventive and brutal. Best action comedy in a while and worth your time if you like that kind of thing!

Generally the movie stuff goes here:

But, I suppose screens is screens these days.

I read about the books and they seem to be good. Will this show be cool too?

Good for Martha Wells! She had some fantasies out in the early 2000s and then disappeared; I thought she’d stopped writing, and then the Murderbot Diaries appeared.

So I guess Stephen King is just taking money for endorsing films now? Because a couple of years ago, after he got an early screening of the Flash, he said it was the best superhero movie he’d ever seen. So either he’s getting paid for these quotes, or he has terrible taste in movies.

Maybe reviews are his new horror genre?

“One of the best movies I’ve seen this year” covers a multitude of sins, so to speak.

Matt Murdoch, latest episode of Daredevil:

We’re not serving justice here, you know? We’re babysitting chaos.

And he wasn’t talking about Daredevil, but about the legal work his firm is doing. It feels timely.

It was really good. And then Matt took a bullet for Fisk?!? OMG!

Yes! And the foreshadowing! When Bullseye told him “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? Defend your worst enemy?” Really good stuff.

Hmmm… still think the character is miscast but who knows, i’m still intrigued.

I think, in the US, at least, we are far too invested in a view of technology as only a positive. We tend to ignore very real problems that technology can cause, and only see it as “progressive”…

Technological pessimism will insure against a more dystopian tomorrow.

So will pretending that any and all technological changes are “good” for us, rather than taking a critical eye to such things, which is what the tech-dude-bros want us to to, because it financially benefits them.

Yup.
Besides, it’s arguably mostly realism, not pessimism.

Exactly… it’s like when people throw about the term “luddite” to describe any skepticism of technology, ignoring the fact that the Luddites were a labor movement and had an important argument to make about who new technology was benefiting and who it should benefit.
