Whatcha Watchin'?

The final episode of iZombie is up. Haven’t watched it yet.

EDIT: OK that was way too convenient for everybody except Michelle. Poor Michelle :frowning:

Coming back to Netflix in August:

Dear White People season 3
Glow season 3
Derry Girls season 2 (If you haven’t seen season 1, drop what you’re doing and watch it now.)

The summer drought may be over.

I was so worried that they would decide not to renew Dear White People.

It’s not just you.

Hop has to be “the American” in the Russian Gulag. And if El doesn’t get her powers back for some reason, then there’s no point in doing s4 because there’s no one else who can fight the demogorgons that are still in this dimension. I’m calling it now; her powers come back and in a moment of pining for Hopper, El accidentally contacts him or ‘sees’ him psychically and realizes he’s still alive. How the hell the Hawkins Get-Along-Gang is going to retrieve him from a prison cell in another country, now that I have NO idea.

I cosign; Poor Joyce.

Also on a different note:

I finished the Izombie series finale last night and it was just as underwhelming and poorly contrived as I expected, ‘happily-ever-after ending’ or not.

I am now officially done with anything helmed by Rob Thomas, for good.

I finally gave into Amazon and watched Fleabag. Amazing. Just started the second season.

Me too. Watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Apart from The Expanse, all the boy shows on Prime kinda suck.

That show is a joy. From the Gilmour Girls creators if you are looking for a follow up series. It’s on Netflix.

I keep saving that one as I think its one my partner would enjoy, but she’s never in the mood for it.

Might watch it just so I know it and watch it again for the “first time” with her.

It’s definitely worth a covert solo-spoil.

I was following a thread on Twitter about using models in film-making, and someone mentioned Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975). The animation in this set of summary clips is very good, but mostly it reminds me just how wonderfully weird “children’s programming” can be when it’s not controlled by toy manufacturers. The cars and puppets from this would make great toys, mind you. (Er, just remember with the 70s comes a certain amount of casual racism and sexism.)

Sweet FSM, we finally caved on CBS all access after seeing the Picard trailer. We started ST: Discovery on Sunday, and are watching at nearly the same pace as we binged GoT. So far, so good!

Heads-up: watch Short Treks before Discovery Season Two.

Or, at the very least, watch Short Treks: “The Brightest Star” before Discovery: “The Sound of Thunder,” and Short Treks: “Runaway” before Discovery: “Such Sweet Sorrow.”

You won’t miss much, plot-wise if you don’t (and, certainly, Short Treks won’t spoil anything for DISC 2), but it’ll introduce a couple characters, and establish a couple relationships, which will be explored further.

And, seriously, Short Treks: “Calypso” is the best anything I’ve seen with the Star Trek brand since DS9 finished its run.

I’ve got a question for folks who’ve seen Veronica Mars.

I watched maybe two of the original episodes, some time in reruns, not sure when. If I want to watch the new series with her as an adult, should I go back and watch the original series? Or would I be safe to just start the new one, without all the background?

There are arcs for all the characters that are completely done before the new season.

If you want to discover what made the series so well loved then I recommend watching the first and second seasons, and then just stopping there. (The third season is just okay, but Rob Thomas’ shortcomings as a writer really start to show. )

If you want to go into it fresh and not be all pissed off at the end, then I suggest completely skipping the original series all together, and starting with the movie then moving on to the 4th season, which ran afoul of many long time fans.

I cannot guarantee that if you watch it start to finish that you’ll be just as disappointed as I was; everyone’s tastes are different.

What I can tell you is that as someone who values good storytelling above all else, I honestly wish someone whose tastes I trust had spoiled me about S4, so I wouldn’t even have bothered to waste my time.

I cannot in good faith recommend the fourth season of VM to anyone; even if one isn’t a fan and has no knowledge about the original show at all, it’s still really poorly written.

That’s quite helpful, thank you.

My reasons for thinking of skipping the original seasons is that I feel quite curmudgeonly lately, and my hulu browsing seems to highlight all kinds of teenager shows and coming of age stuff, and just at the moment I want the kids off my lawn. It comes and goes, though, because I’m not usually anti-teen.

It sounds like there are additional reasons to go this route, and really, avoiding getting pissed off is a high priority at the moment. Cheers!

I feel ya; I’m most definitely not the intended demographic either.

That said, the original VM series isn’t the typical ‘angsty teen drama’ vehicle; the main characters are extremely likeable, with good chemistry and snappy dialog.

This is the series that cemented my love for Kristen Bell, and Enrico Colantoni is wonderful in it; his back and forth with Bell is awesome and should alleviate any annoyance you may feel about the genre in general.

The writing in the first two seasons isn’t perfect, but it’s still miles above and beyond the crap that Thomas pulled out of his ass for S4.

Cheers; let me know what you think when you get done.

That’s one of the things that turned me off Another Life on Netflix. 20 something astronauts I can believe. 20 something astronauts with perfect hair, manicures, obvious makeup, and attitudes more akin to checked-out teenagers I cannot.

There were several times during the first episode where I wondered when they were going to, you know, check something about how the ship was working, or do data entry, or anything at all astronaut-y, as opposed to slouching around the ready room like it was a local coffee house.

It wasn’t really the 20 something part as much as the disaffected asshole part. Partly I felt offended on behalf of 20 somethings.
