Whatcha Watchin'?

some of those seem like parodies of morse episodes.

Yes. “Lewis” wasn’t bad, but it is substantially more light-hearted than “Morse.”

And they have been remastered of the 35mm film. The picture is unbelievably good.

I think Shaun Evans is a good actor, but I can’t see him growing up to be John Thaw.

On a side note — Inspector Morse, as created by Colin Dexter, had an interesting idea at its core which is missing from its various spin-offs. It was about serious crimes being committed by people with a high level of education but no real knowledge of the world.

Oh I like that. I don’t know anyone who’s committed murder, but I did used to know a lot of people with masters and PhDs who were really weird about ethics. When I read what you wrote I thought of one person who stole a rare copy of a book under the guise of “showing” it to the author. The author just happened to autograph it, writing “to X” with the “borrower’s” name on it. Oops! /s

Had to badger them nearly a year to provide a replacement copy to the original owner, during which time they were rather indignant their friends could be so “petty”.

Lots of more harmful stuff than that flying around at the time, always under the radar.

I do not doubt that.

I just came across that my own self.

I’m surprised that she didn’t mention the relocation of the chandelier drop from the end of Act I to the climax of Act II, either for the good or the bad (personally, I think it was a bad idea, especially since they kept the musical cue for it, a powerful cue that they use to… transition to black).

But yes, I agreed with most of the points she made. Especially when she shows what the Phantom looks like on stage; I don’t think she explicitly compares the makeup from stage and film, but there is no excuse why the stage makeup looks more grotesque.

Yeah, that confused the hell out of me. Of course, I only have the two disc set to work with, never having seen it on stage.

Okay, with regards to Stranger Things 3… so is it just me that is pissed that they maybe killed off Hopper and that hopes he’s the “American” in the cell in Russia? And will El get her powers back? The Suzie reveal was worth the wait. She’s great, and I hope they bring her back next season! Overall a solid season, though. I love how they tend to keep sets of characters apart until the very end.

Oh, and what did everyone else think about the redemption of Billy at the very end… Not sure I liked that, but I get why they did it.

of course Hopper is in the cell. No body shown = not dead. Poor Joyce. She may never date again.

I was also pleased with the addition of Robin and Erica, even if the cast size is getting too big to focus on the characters.

I’m hoping for the other powered girl from Season 2 to make a reappearance and jump start El.

technically, it’s a sports anime.

No. The tossed-off line about “the American” can only mean one thing, or why say it? It’s a strong hint for another season, but I don’t know how they will get the old gang back together now they are all scattered.

For myself, I thought the emphasis on personal relationships rather than the bashing-scary-monsters aspects made this season more enjoyable.

David Harbour has pretty much confirmed that Hopper will be back – in fact, he has a contract for season 4 – so “the American” has got to be him.

I’m finally watching the last seasons of the X-Files (the ones with Reyes and Doggett). They first aired around when I temporarily lost access to TV for a few years.

It took me a few episodes, but I finally realized after seeing Cary Elwes’ name in the credits that “OMG, Slimeball Brad is Wesley, the Dead Pirate Roberts!”

The guy’s got range.

Hunt for Red October

Two observations:

  1. Men in this film are too important to dial telephones. Instead, the handset is picked up, and orders are given
  2. The director chooses to use focus to transition from character to character. Characters in foreground talk, then focus changes to characters in the background. The anime I’m watching, Welcome to the Ballroom uses a similar technique, except that it is drawn blurrier, and sharper as conditions dictate, mimicking the style. Unfortunately, my streaming provider (amazon) degrades resolution as bandwidth is constrained. This destroys the effect, as intentional blurring can not be reliably distinguished from a loss of bandwidth.

alas.
I really need to reconfigure my router…
