Was the intro sequence modified to foil antipiracy schemes, or was that just tone-deaf in the original?
Oh! It’s the rhyming couplet kid!
It was like that originally. I think I know what you mean, but it doesn’t really evoke blackface for me, lacking the exaggerated white or red lips.
watched The Lobster over the weekend. still trying to decide what happens at the end.
in other news, Adult Swim is now streaming the entire Samurai Jack series, whoohoo!
You liking? I was thinking it might be worth checking out.
It’s sad and infuriating, but heartening at the same time, and it’s well acted with 3-dimensional characters.
I enjoyed Shtisel for offering a close look at a religion and culture that I knew little about, and Unorthodox goes deeper, while showing that culture colliding with the outside world. (Shira Haas plays a somewhat similar character in both, in the sense of being a rebellious young woman, although her rebellion takes different forms.)
The world’s end
it begins as thoughtful film about male friendship, the ephemerality of human memory, and the passage of time, but it turns out to be more about getting fucking pissed on lager and battling robots.
loved that movie, heh.
If not directly inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide, then a remarkable example of convergent evolution
Ok, no, I’m not watching it. But, my curiosity’s been raised enough that I might if I happen to have the uninterrupted time to do so…
It’s quite a film. I’ve only seen pieces of it but hope to see the entire thing someday.
I ran across a version a few years ago on TV with American dubbing added to obscure its origins. In tone it’s sort of a cross between Lawrence of Arabia and Flight of the Phoenix.
I’ll have to try to fInd the version mentioned in the article that is on YouTube.
I just… what? Why? What’s next, The Sword in the Stone? Fantasia? (yes, I know there were rumors of a remake of part of it, but sure, why not the whole thing!)
Though this does remind me that I still need to find a copy of the old Robin Hood. “Oodelally, oodelally, golly what a day…”
If we’re going to do a show where people think they can see the future, there are three possibilities:
-
The future is a straight line and it cannot be changed
-
The future is multidimensional and chaotic and it changes constantly
-
It’s ALMOST impossible to change the future, but we can SOMETIMES if we try REALLY HARD
The third item on the list is a cop out, why do they keep doing this
I’m not sure I’d necessarily call it good*, but it is captivating in its devotion to be the anti-Nancy Drew**.
*All of the actors seem totally fine, and several of them are quite good.
**Nancy Drew is defined here by her steadfast belief in logic and detective work, and this series’ supernatural trappings seem to fly in the face of all of that.
Yeah, I saw that too (was a huge fan of the books, growing up), and really wondered what the heck happened? Nancy Drew being the one who believes in the supernatural to explain everything was such a shock, I assumed it was all going to be explained logically by the end, so I wanted to see if I could figure out how. But nope, it seems to be firmly in the woo-woo camp.
Killing Eve has hit Hulu. It’s very good in a quirky, smartass Tyler Durden kind of way. But more of a ZeroHedge Tyler Durden kind of way, which is less fun. But Phoebe Waller-Bridge is probably one of the most competent uber-elite in entertainment. So watchable.
