Whatcha Watchin'?

Recommend watching Lovecraft Country and then listening to the official HBO podcast. As a fan of the Mythos, I picked up the Lovecraft Easter eggs. As a white guy, I completely missed many references to the Black experience. In the podcast, two women rather than doing a scene analysis examine the family dynamic. Come for the Horror, stay for the history.

Watched through Netflixā€™s one season of ā€œCursedā€ over the last weekā€¦

Itā€™s an interesting inversion/retelling of the Arthurian legends, and had enough to get me watching all the way through the season. Didnā€™t seem as aimed towards teens as Iā€™d expect from trailers, etc. Taking it as a comic-book originated story, I liked it.

It did have a few drawbacks for me which might be a bit nitpicky:

  • If you know much about the usual legends then it does mess with expectations a bit.
  • It is still a coming-of-age kind of story with a lot of young characters, so expectations managed thereā€¦
  • The main characterā€™s hair is always arranged in a certain way, no matter what sheā€™s been going through, and maybe itā€™s weird but that did really start to annoy me as things went on.
  • Just about every antagonist is motivated in some way by the idea of having the sword (of Arthurian legend), but most of them seem to do very little to actually try to capture/claim it.

Funeral in Berlin

I wish the Iprcress file was available, but no.

Can someone explain this

Itā€™s seen in the funeral exfiltration scene.

The text means ā€œSee, thatā€™s what you had coming to you.ā€
The black eagle on a yellow background is the German coat of arms.

Beyond that, I have no idea what it means. Is the vacuum cleaner pertinent?

The German Propaganda archive, which has only spotty coverage of the DDR says (of a different cartoon)

Here one of these East German border crossers is working as a maid for a West Berlin family. The maid is saying: ā€œThis time, gracious lady, I could only bring along sixteen sticks of butter. The food supply situation keeps getting worse for us in the East.ā€

The point of the cartoon is that prices for basic foodstuffs in East Germany were subsidized, and were generally much cheaper than in West Germany.

https://research.calvin.edu/german-propaganda-archive/eule61.htm

so perhaps the maid is an east berliner scolding a militaristic west german eagle for abusing the hospitality of the soviet sector.

Oh, so that was on the East Berlin side? I suppose it all comes down to whatever the heck is stacked on the floor in front of the eagle.

This was at the Bornholmer StraƟe crossing, and could be seen from the American sector.

Iā€™m attempting to watch as much of the entire run of ā€œMatch Gameā€ in its 1970sā€™ incarnation; specifically, from 1973 to 1978. Itā€™s amazing, the things I notice now that I didnā€™t notice as a viewer back then, though I am a bit older and have somewhat (?) of a better grasp of how the world works. I also have a greater appreciation for many of the panelists than I did then. Iā€™m rather sure Brett Somers is my spirit guide, though Iā€™ve had no dreams with her in themā€¦yet.

Also, since Iā€™m semi-binge watching, 1973 seems to be lasting as long as 2020. Gonna be watching this one next:

The Forbidden Room

Itā€™s even weirder than The Saddest Music in the World (also directed by Guy Maddin), and uses similar visual techniques.

IMO Lucifer peaked in Season 2, but Iā€™ll give the new one a try anyway

Thunderbirds are go.

Itā€™s very tropey, and seems designed to sell toys. The system of legal norms surrounding International Rescue donā€™t hold up to scrutiny.

Itā€™s a impressive restoration, though.

Someone on YT put together a 25-part series of the Best of Larry, Darryl, and Darryl. Iā€™m on part 14.

we started watching the old The Saint TV series last night, after learning that despite popular thought, Roger Moore was actually the actor they originally wanted to play James Bond, but he was tied up making this, and so they went with Connery until they had an opportunity to use him. Iā€™ve seen some episodes, and of course know the theme song, but i canā€™t say i was super familiar with it. the early- to mid-sixties furniture and fashions are to die for.

I keep meaning to look into that. I know someone who watched the 2017 TV movie andā€¦ wasnā€™t impressed.

The 1997 movie is kind of a guilty pleasure for meā€¦ not a great movie, and good lord some of the disguises they put Val Kilmer in are laughably horrible, but still fun to watch.

iā€™m enjoying it. i can almost always guess what the twist is going to be, but itā€™s still fun. itā€™s Bond before Bond, which is interestingā€¦ and they just introduced his meathead muscle man (live in helper?) named Hoppy or Poppy or something. heā€™s a hoot. he was trying to, uh, reallocate the booze in the apartment before Roger Moore stopped him. he apparently loves his cocktails, haha.

i had forgotten they had made movies. not sure iā€™m into that. I like the original Avengers for the same reason. itā€™s the time period and the actors that make it appealing.
