Another Discord watch party tonight-- a double feature. The first flick was 28 Days Later, which I more or less ignored. (I’ve seen it before, and liked it okay, but wasn’t in the mood for its bleakness tonight.) The second movie was what I showed up for:

I haven’t seen it in years, but I love it just as much as I did back then. The narrative is so tight, almost everything in the beginning of the film gets referenced in some way by the end. The acting’s terrific, the emotional journey still holds up, and the comedy still makes me laugh. For me, it’s a classic.

(The streamer who hosts the movie nights liked the first one better. I agree with him on a lot of things, but we do not have the same taste in movies. )

I really love how the opening of Shaun of the Dead is just normal people going about their normal lives and yet it is indistinguishable from when the zombie apocalypse breaks out. That’s just such a simple, quiet, yet sharp commentary on our lives. That movie had me right from the title screen.

that movie is pure genius from end to end. one of those movies where you can find something worthy to quote in every scene.

Last night’s Discord-party double-feature was… interesting.

Viewers chose the first movie by voting in a poll. The winner was:

The Princess Bride: Directed by Rob Reiner. With Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest. While home sick in bed, a young boy

It was wonderful, as always. We were lucky enough to have someone in chat who had some behind-the-scenes trivia to share; it was also fun to see the reactions of a couple of viewers who’d never seen the movie before (usually, “how did I never see this before, it’s so good!” )

The streamer chose the second movie, because he’d never seen it:

I’m still getting my thoughts together on this one. It’s a powerful movie, and I can see why it won so many awards. But it’s definitely not the light-hearted romp the first movie was; the ending left me stunned and sad.

As a biting, black-comedy commentary on class struggles and inequality, it’s fascinating; we also see the flaws and foibles of everyone involved, rich and poor alike, which makes the characters both more and less sympathetic at times. It’s hard watching some of the choices that are made, yet the audience can’t ignore the desperation that drives those actions either. It’s an excellent movie, and I recommend it; but be warned, it’s not a feel-good flick.

I might be watching this

Rumors has it that it’s based on “master and commander” this time. I believe Bethany and Crowe have successfully aged themselves out of any prequels.

A WWII Youtube history channel that consists of nothing but first-person accounts by veterans, done as voiceover for historical footage. No host, no commentary, no modern visuals.

Unusually well done.

Last weekend’s Discord double feature was Alien and Aliens. It was particularly notable for me because I hadn’t seen either for years. The last time I’d seen them was while watching them with my mother, about two months before she died. So it was a bit emotional for me, but sharing it in a group of friendly people helped… and both are truly good movies.

I just finished watching this:

I enjoyed it, too! Spoilers ahead:

The first part is the movie itself, the actual One Cut of the Dead that was filmed. The second part of the flick was the behind-the-scenes process of the making of that movie. A Zombie network decides they want a half-hour live special, choosing a self-admitted mediocre director with big dreams to make it happen. But, of course, things don’t go smoothly, and the production is faced with making quick decisions to avoid a total failure. This part is pure comedy, and I liked it just as much as I liked the horror first-half (even if some of the beats were kind of predictable.)

It wasn’t quite what I expected from all the hype, but it was still very good, and worth the time to watch.

I don’t know if this would hold up in court, but it’s a great scene.

There were a few things that made this one of the rare movies that I watch start to finish in one sitting.

The film quality, with all those old glitches (the little blots you’d briefly see), the characters’ interaction with each other, the way that the actors seemed to actually like what they were doing and all. It was a good story, well-told. Comforting to watch.
