Anyone watch anime?
I’ve been watching the Tower of God lately. It is based on the South Korean manhwa, which I haven’t read.
The first few episodes were driving me a little nuts. I almost always watch anime in the original language with subtitles Usually Japanese but there have been some good ones in the last few years in Mandarin.
I don’t speak Japanese but after so many years, I’m familiar with the sounds and some words.
But this one the names in the subtitles weren’t in the voices. In fact, it appeared the voiced names were often completely different sounds from the subtitles. I eventually found the answer online. The anime producers had localized most, but not all, of the character names. When the subtitles were done, the importing company (Crunchyroll I think) had the names from the mahnwa used for subtitles because they wanted English speaking fans of the mahnwa to recognize the characters. And maybe because they recognized how icky it was.
Changing the character names to ones that have similar meanings in Japanese sucks. You shouldn’t change a character’s name unless it is somehow offensive to the new audience. It is striping away the identity of the original work that otherwise the producers seem to have followed fairly closely.
Even worse that it it was Japanese producers changing Korean names for characters in a Korean mahnwa. Extra super ick that it seems the only names the Japanese producers left alone were the names that aren’t Korean. Names like Jule Viole Grace, Wraithriser, and Rachel. I’ve seen this justified online. The reasoning is the meaning of the names have significance in the story.
But we all have the Internet. People can just look up that Bam means night
It was a bad choice. This is one of the few anime’s I’d prefer to watch dubbed into English.

The Tower of God anime was somewhat turbulent. I haven’t read the manhwa/webtoon but people seemed to be pretty excited and i watched the 1st season. I thought it was fine but it didn’t catch my attention enough to want to watch the 2nd season. I also recall people loudly complaining about things that were changed so reading your post does seem to make sense why folks were disappointed.
As far as the dubs not matching the subs… yeah that’s common even for some homegrown Japanese anime. My partner prefers dubs, i prefer subs and when i watch something with her i need to put on subtitles anyway and it. drives. me. insane. that the subtitles don’t match the English dub.
Separately you mentioned about a lot of things being switched over to Japanese. Yeah that sometimes happens because internationally Japanese anime/manga is more marketable so it would “make sense” to present certain things under a Japanese shine. But thankfully people are slowly giving more attention to Korean anime and manhwa, i would recommend watching Solo Leveling. It’s a bit slow since there’s a lot of setup in the 1st season, but it’s all building towards the last ep of the season. I’ve read the manhwa and it’s not amazing story-wise, but the art is excellent and as far as power fantasies go it’s told pretty well. 2nd season should be coming out this next year.

I enjoyed Solo Leveling. Not a deep story, but interesting with great animation. I also liked Link Click a lot, a donghua with a great story and animation. I watched that in the original Mandarin with English subs. If you haven’t checked out Link Click, you should.

That reminds me! I need to finish watchin this donghua, i saw the first two eps and was blown away by the quality. It’s called Blades of the Guardians
Only reason i didn’t continue watching it was that i had to use a streaming platform i don’t normally use since its not easily watchable in the US. So i forgot about it 
now i need to finish it.

Not watching yet (to be released) but more Philomena Cunk joy, in the trailer for “Cunk on Life”.
It was hard to get past “repugnant wombats” but I’m sure it was just a blip.

I found The Honeymooners Christmas Special.
My mom loved The Honeymooners, and I did too, growing up.
I never knew that they got back together and did a Christmas special a couple decades later. So I was super excited to see it.
Now I know why I never knew about it.
They did manage to throw in a little humor, and there were brief moments that felt just like the show, but there were also many moments where the actors were just looking at each other and it was clear on their faces, “really, this is all we have to work with? We have to stretch this out for a full hour?”
It just wasn’t good, or even Christmasy. There was one brief scene with a Christmas tree and that was that, just to have it in there so they could call it a Christmas special.
Aside from that it was just like they hauled some old actors out to try to make a buck on something that was 20 years past, and the actors themselves weren’t really into it. They did get into it for a couple minutes here and there, which was nice, but that couldn’t save it.
Now I’m sad, because I think they could’ve done so much better with those characters and those actors. Even with the same plot. If they’d had the writers from 20+ years before, it could’ve been much better.

They just added Barbie to Netflix, so I’m thinking we might be doing Barbenheimer for Christmas!

I tried watching Oppenheimer. Couldn’t do it. Christopher Nolan’s movies are always centered around men, women are always accessories to the men or help-meets, and I’m done with that wankery.
Barbie, on the other hand, was an absolute delight, and we’re definitely going to watch it a couple more times.

The husband is excited about it, as it’s a science-based film. I like Cillian Murphy… Nolan’s fine, I guess, as a film maker, but I agree about the male-centric wankery, and about being sick of it.
Barbie should be fun!

well, this looks amazing, and also, like a film I won’t be able to watch, sadly… my motion sickness was getting a little triggered just watching the trailer, sadly… 
The book is still on my to read pile, so I’ll read that soonish.

I have seen both Barbie and Oppenheimer. I enjoyed both, and I’m not really a Christopher Nolan fan. It is very male centric, though. The only women characters of note are Kitty Oppenheimer, played by Emily Blunt, and Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh. Both are criminally underrepresented in the film. Especially Jean Tatlock, whose story probably warrants a movie just about her.
Barbie is just a ton of fun. And there is nothing wrong with a movie that’s just fun.

I enjoyed Barbie overall but the movie seemed to be made for depressed millennials going through an existential crisis. My favorite part was when it randomly became a musical and honestly I wish that took up more of the run time
