Director Harry Bromley Davenport stated in an interview on the DVD release that he looks back on the film with embarrassment, saying that the bizarre atmosphere of the film was completely unintentional and that there is no deeper, symbolic meaning to the strange, random events that happen, because he and his co-writers were very high on drugs while writing the script and would often throw in whatever random ideas popped into their heads or thought would be neat…

Does sound promising.

So… one of the streamers I watch has successfully turned many of us into One Piece fans.:joy::rofl:

He started us off with the live-action, which we watched, twice. Then he started showing us the anime. I’ve missed and/or slept through a few here and there, and some nights I’ve listened a bit more than watched, but yeah, I’m hooked. It’s a ton of fun, although there are things that might play well in the original culture that don’t work so well for me-- there’s a ton of fanservice in some of the female characters’ outfits which is less there for the males’, and we’re all pretty disgusted with Sanji’s girl-craziness, but overall it’s really good fun (and surprisingly kinda anarchist in principle, despite the many monarchies we come across. Luffy wants freedom for everyone to follow their dreams and has a knack for turning enemies into allies, and fights against the World Government’s tyrannical schemes, and that’s all pretty cool.)

Friday night, we got to a pivotal episode-- 1071. For those in the know, a very important thing happened in that one, and it’s glorious. Spoiler for those who want to know: Luffy fully activates his Devil Fruit, which is more special than any of us knew, and he’s become Joy Boy, a legendary figure of liberation from a history the World Government wants to stay lost and has killed many people to insure it. I’m still grinning over it. The fight he’s in isn’t over yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing its conclusion come Monday night (or maybe over a few nights, battles aren’t quick in One Piece.)

…and the funny thing is, I remember saying at TOP that I wouldn’t mind catching up on it some day, and here I am doing it… with some help. (It is going to stink when we catch up to the series and have to wait for new episodes with everybody else. Since we usually watch a few each weeknight we’re a few weeks away from that point. :grimacing: )

Any other One Piece fans here to squee with me?:joy::rofl:

I’ve watched maybe the first major arc of One Piece, not sure how many episodes that is. 100? What i saw was fun but the sheer length of it really dissuaded me from keeping up with it

According to the wiki, the anime is 1133 episodes long and still going…

If I wasn’t watching it as part of a group, I’m honestly not sure I’d have stuck with it this long myself. The fact that the episodes are fairly short helps, though the pacing can stretch out one fight over many episodes (and don’t get me started on the fillers…) Still, it’s a fairly rich story, and I like how even enemies are given backstory so we can understand why they are the way they are.

They skipped one of my favorites, Fear in the City of the Living Dead, which, with its blasphemy, a hanged priest starts all the troubles, sexual silliness, the village idiot is tempted to the side of evil by a blow-up sex doll, and zombies that pop in and out of existence like they escaped from a Melies film, feels like a tribute to the old school surrealists but with added gore.

ETA: Hey, I recall that I previously posted a link to one of the films from that list, Demons, above. In case anyone’s curious.
