Whatcha Watchin'?

This video has spoilers for the new Superman, so don’t watch if that’s important to you. But if you want to see Ben Shapiro getting roasted by a drunk comic book nerd for 40 minutes . . . enjoy!

I’ve seen a lot of crap on TV, but this one is definitely in the top five of the worst movies ever made. Ed Wood, we’re sorry we treated your legacy so poorly. You had passion and love for móvies. You didn’t deserve to be called the creator of the worst movie in the world. There are some people who were eager to stole your crown.

It was supposed to be modern, trendy, a portrait of our time so full of surveillance cameras and screens, but it’s as cringe and tacky as the worst moments of Black Mirror, and come on, that series had its share of crap.

Somehow they cast big techies as heroes of our time and the infamous podcasts make cameos in the film among a Lot of product placements.

The stylistic decision to have people face webcams ALL the time made it feel like another Teams meeting, a meeting that could have been a meme.

The film Searching was much more successful in its attempt to capture the digital zeitgeist and the omnipresence of screens and cameras.

Seance over Zoom, things go wrong. Host (2020)

I liked this Zoom based horror movie. (Filmed in 2020, I think it was genuinely completely filmed over Zoom, with some post-production special effects.)

I saw the movie (Superman) tonight; it was fun, corny, sometimes over the top corny, but sweet.

As for spoilers; I think we all know the basics of the plot, which is every Superman movie ever.

Searching is legitimately good, which is due in no small part to John Cho. I think the movie also works because the plot is centered around the gimmick. War of the Worlds (2025) seems like it would fail if for no other reason than an Alien invasion would be something that should be experienced firsthand. The forced product-placement (which is saying something in the modern age) likely adds insult to injury. I’ll probably watch it eventually, but not because I think it will be any good.

As an interesting counterpoint, I’d recommend the series Upload:

It’s actually funny, but also does a surprising job of biting the hand that feeds it. It has no shortage of criticism for Big Tech, which seem like the opposite of what’s above. Season 4 is about to premiere, although the big revelation of Season 3 (voter disenfranchisement via digital afterlife) seems honestly a bit quaint when compared to what’s happened in the real world since 2020.
