Not a funny ‘joke’ to a parent to who wanted to give their kid the gift of ‘atypical literature,’ and who likes the work of Edward Gorey.
Lucky me, I only bought the first novel and just borrowed the others from the library.

The so-much-more-cool-than-reality alternate universe they live in is starting to remind me of Blade Runner, albeit based on the '60s instead of the '80s, and the newer supporting characters are reminding me of Aeon Flux. And of course the plot makes no sense at all. I don’t expect we’re supposed to understand it until the season is over.
Not that I’m complaining. But maybe I’ll wait and binge it in the fall.
the series is aptly named, and i think kids would get the joke. i read all thirteen, and there actually is an arc by the end. the TV show is expanding on the things only hinted at in the books, specifically, the secret society their parents were part of, which is where Lemony Snickett/Patrick Warburton comes in as the narrator.
I have finally watched Speed Racer (the movie - now on Netflix) and I think it may be one of the greatest movies ever.
But…judging by the half empty bottle of bourbon in front of me, I may not be the most impartial of video judges
Go! Speed Racer, GO!
It appears as if a Series of Unfortunate Events is next up in the queue.
If you wanted to dissuade me…starting off with Patrick Burton was your first mistake…
Edir: And adding NPH is next in your line of errors
Well, I see (me-who-has-finished-a-half-bottle) is going to be sucked in
The joke being that the books were basically just a thinly-veiled marketing scheme to make money?
Mkay.
I think Mad Magazine did a better job with their version title:
A Series of Uneventful Misfortunes.
But whatevs.
I like NPH, so I might check it out if I get bored enough.
So far, I Can’t say don’t watch it.
But the bottle was nearly full near an hour ago.
Well, that could be a good thing, OR a bad thing, just depending…
So far good I’ve opted for the second episode.
BTW there’s another current series out there based on minor characters from the X-Men
It’s not overtly related to Legion but it’s also pretty good.
Totally forgot to list this one because it’s such a given for me:
If you had already discovered Gorey… yeah, I can see that.
I got the first book for my niece a year ago, and my brother is still thanking me, because it finally got the nieces off Disney Princesses and into Lemony Snicket, Star Wars, and The Far Side. He has cheerfully read all 15 Unfortunate Events books now, including the chapter that repeats “They climbed and climbed.” for 98% of the text, because to him it’s still better than reading about Disney Princesses.
Now that you mention it, perhaps I should introduce the nieces to Gorey. Thank you for that!
I had, and I guess that gave me unrealistically high expectations of ‘Lemony Snickett.’
Right on; lucky me, my kid was never really into Disney (or Barbie.)
I’m glad I could remind you; the Gashlycrumb Tinies are still a favorite around my house.
that’s quite a cynical perspective you got there. lighten up, francis.
If that’s news to you, you really must not pay any attention whatsoever to my content.
And that’s cool; just like it’s okay if I don’t like the same stuff that you do.
We’ve had this conversation before, there’s no need to recycle it yet again…
I love the sets, and how the whole world seems so dark, dreary, and twisted and yet nobody seems to notice. And how every adult is a way-out-there eccentric.
I tried with the Lemony Snicket books and they didn’t work for me. I think with my own daughter, she really does not like books that are about people feeling pain or being made a joke of, or being lied to. Unfortunately a lot of books rely on these devices to advance a plot.
yeah, it’s not news to me, more like i keep being reminded. it won’t be the last time, i’m sure. carry on – see you next time!
we actually were commenting last night about the insane sets, and the attention to details in them, yeah. and it really is funny how every adult is completely ridiculous in some way. only the Baudelaires (and the other triplets) seem basically normal.
Actually, I think it will; once the mansplaining over shit that doesn’t really matter starts, my willingness to engage begins to diminish… whether that was the conscious intent or not.
completely unconscious. in fact, i’m sorry and i apologize if you felt it was implied. i thought we were just having a back and forth about a silly TV show.
