Speaking of same actors, Oleg Burov (The Americans)

has just been sent on a clandestine mission to the US, where he shows up on Homeland as Yevgeny Gromov, a Russian agent on a clandestine mission.

Is anyone watching Homeland? Fifteen or twenty years ago it would have been an entertaining paranoid conspiracy thriller, now it’s ripped-from-the-headlines stuff.

I’m still faithfully watching Homeland, and am especially tickled to see Burov (oops, Ronin. Thanks, @teknocholer). He’s a great actor, and I’m also hoping his character on the final season of The Americans makes it out okay. Sure, he was smarmy in the beginning, but he’s making progress. They are going through with the final season of The Americans, aren’t they? They’d better not leave us hanging.

Back to Homeland, I’m also very engaged with Carrie’s battle with depression/bipolar issues this season. A couple of moments really hit home for me.

Also @teknocholer, I’m watching and very much enjoying Homeland on a weekly dripfeed. The parallels with the current administration are incredible!

Yeah, it’s Michelle Gomez as Missy, aka the Master from Doctor Who. Michelle Gomez does “delightfully batshit” rather well, doesn’t she!

Oh not at all, I just think it’s remarkable, considering most shows go for boobs overload. It’s a nice change of pace, actually.

It just started. The new season is set in 1987, and much has changed. I’m not optimistic about Oleg Burov’s chances. (The actor who plays him is Costa Ronin, actually a Russian.)

Spoilers for Episode 1 follow.

He’s on a clandestine mission in the US which is not sanctioned by his government, trying to subvert an initiative by powerful forces in politics, the KGB and the military. He’s talking to Philip, so there’s the risk that he and FBI agent Stan Beeman will cross paths, and his task is to block Elizabeth, who is pretty much an unstoppable force.

i agree. i really liked the book, and i was very encouraged when i read that the kept the entire encounter with the efreet intact. it was one of the most sensual, mind-blowing parts of the book to me.

Yeah, it’s pretty incredible. And then they went and expanded the role of Salim and had him meet up with Laura and Mad Sweeney. Even though Gillian Anderson isn’t coming back, I’m looking forward to the second season. I’m still patiently waiting for the second American Gods book, though, which he’s supposed to be working on…

I’ve meant to catch this, but never gotten around to it. I’ve heard that one significant difference between the two versions, besides pace, technicolor and widescreen, is that director McCarey’s religiosity is expressed much more strongly in An Affair to Remember. What’s your take?

Yes. Much more overtly religious.

What can’t you beat?

Already, in just the first ep of the second season? FX doesn’t release all the episodes at once like Netflix, do they?

Did the screenwriters concoct their own narrative for that series? Because the books were woefully lacking when it came to story arc, character development, or any kind of resolution.

There was literally no ‘there’ there; just a retread of the exact same action in different settings over the course of like a dozen books.

well, that’s kind of the joke, actually.

but from what i remember of the books, yes, it follows them. they take their time and devote two episodes to each book, so there’s ample time for soaking in the details of each location and for hilarious scene-chewing by the actors. Neil Patrick Harris and Patrick Warburton are just SO much fun to watch, and i squealed in glee to see Nathan Fillion joining the cast in this episode, too. i hope he sticks around.
