Early design stages for a giant puppet

Now we’re just getting silly

The board is looking great! I love the feather figure down the middle. Can’t wait to see the dip bowl. That kind of carving is out of my league.

I’m close to finishing the end-grain cutting board I’ve been working on. I’m really happy with how it is turning out. I wish I had taken a pre-finish picture. It’s so much darker now with the finish soaking in.

Reminds me of the Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont.

Just one. It’ll be in a parade.

I used to do puppetry when I was a children’s librarian. My favourite part was making the puppets, although I did perform as well.

I have a fond memory if making a hand puppet in… maybe 4th or 5th grade. I put way more effort into it than I anticipated and ended up pretty ok considering I did paper mĆ¢chĆ© without following any how-tos. Was nice enough that the teacher was impressed and asked if I wanted to put together a puppet show with some of the other best student-made puppets. I’m crazy shy so adult me is surprised that I heartily said yes and put together a made up puppet show that we presented to the early grades.

Wish i had saved that puppet or at least gotten a picture of it.

I was very shy, and have always had agoraphobia, so I was trepidatious when I was voluntold at the height of my agoraphobia that I’d be doing puppet shows. I was very surprised to find that the combination of puppets and being behind the screen of the backdrop lowered a lot of anxiety.

I’m a weird combination of way outgoing and way shy, but yes i found myself feeling the same about the whole thing. It was fun  a lot of work but worth it.

Same here, in terms of outgoing and shy, which is odd.

End-grain cutting board is complete!

This board features a lot of local wood species: walnut, maple, madrone, cherry, and three colors of white oak.

Oh, and one non-local: purpleheart inlay where there were defects.

Gorgeous!

That’s excellent! I have been meaning to try something like that. I have loads of walnut and maple, as well as smaller amounts of things like plum and dogwood. (Thinking commences. This is usually a bad sign.)

Thank you!

After looking at the pattern from above, I should have continued the diagonal pattern down the center with the pale oak sapwood. It wouldn’t have crossed the whole board due to the odd number of laterals, but it would have been cool to continue it.

Well, see above for one tip: dry fit your laterals before committing it to glue up to look for sub-patterns!

If you have walnut and maple, that’s begging for a chiaroscuro pattern of some kind!

Cool! Do the beads flow through like sand or are they static/symbolic?

Why not both? :person_shrugging:t5:

They can flow, but I’m hoping to keep some in both sides.
