What's in a name?

Also: I would suggest that people consider checking the .pub extensions in addition to the .cafe and .space, since I think some of the names suggested would work well with those TLDs and I’m surprised they haven’t been used yet. I like .pub because of the dual meanings of 1) publication and 2) public house.

Me too elsewhere.cafe is nifty. Not crazy long either.

theadhocracy is also available in these TLDs

happymutants.space is fine. A legal challenge by anyone claiming trademark infringement would be the best of all worlds, but I don’t think it will happen. IANAL

What about threadhocracy?

@strokeybeard: Put it on the list!

@MarkDow: there are a few problems with that. First, Happy Mutant LLC would have to defend their mark, or lose it. So unless we get an official license, I expect they will tell us not to use that name. That’s not to say we can’t ask, but that leads us to point two, which is that many folks here seem to want a clean break. To be defined by ourselves not the past. We can put it to a vote, I suppose, but that’s my sense of the general consensus.

A simple solution would be to simply quote Devo.

I just wanna ping @tinoesroho and @crenquis to verify Numbers Station and Annexia, since those should definitely be in the running.

NumbersStation.com is taken.
Annexia.com is taken.

.club versions of the name are available.

Numbersstation.io might be good—it looks like input/output, or 1/0.

That’s my preference. Any finger given to BB is a finger given to Cory, Xeni, Andrea, and others I have no beef with. I favour a name that isn’t a reference to an ephemeral pop culture meme, and one that is broad enough to cover the widest range of topics.

I do like Numbers Station, Croatoan, and Caravanserai. Elsewhere or some variation isn’t bad, although it does bring to mind the recent unpleasantness for those in the know.

Personally, while I agree with a clean break, I don’t for a second believe that the site authors aren’t fully aware with what happened and, overall, OK with it. JLW isn’t some rogue actor and at least some of the authors have never really liked the BBS or the community at all.

No need to restrict ourselves to the oversubscribed .com space. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing us adhere to one of the new TLDs such as .space, .cafe, .here, or others.

I say this as someone whose first job came with the title of ‘Hostmaster’, back in the days when .com domains were free and it took an entire FTE to manage a few thousand DNS records. As much as I might kvetch against the willy nilly expansion of top-level domains from a nostalgic POV, I would love to see this experiment pioneer a new TLD as well.

I’ve had the issue of late when I look up a domain name that the name gets snatched within a day by some domain sitter. I’m lately just buying domains that are not too pricey that interest me and are available. I’m curious if others have had this issue and if there is a workaround that doesn’t involve my wallet.

Y’all, the domain is fine as is, officially. The Entity is thrilled to see Happy Mutants become a thing beyond our responsibility and moderatorial sniper range.
