I have managed not to be mad about the whole Elsewhere incident, not really mad in my bones mad. I’m not the kind of person who feels that way. Man I’m pissed.
I really miss how it used to be a community there. I very rarely even go there now.
Sure the articles are a little less fresh, but there is still life in the blog. The community though, how they handled our legit concerns, I cannot believe the cahones to act like he is someone who knows about treating communities with respect.
Thank you, JLW, for showing me how much I treasure wonderful online spaces. Thanks for the time you were a part of creating the community we have here now. I hope you really really reconsider the direction you are taking the BB BBS. I’m not going back there anymore, because you don’t show one bit of remorse and I need a space where people treat my feelings with respect. People are going to hurt each other online, but if we are friends, we apologize and show we are trying our best. I can’t be a part of a space where the host doesn’t apologize or change his behavior when so many people share their concerns.

I have to say: this has been a remarkably chill place to discuss things, especially compared to Elsewhere. Interesting since there are so many of the same players.
Sure, sometimes things get heated, but you can find the same people discussing another topic amicably enough on a different thread. I’m not sure what the Ingredient X is (smaller group? different self-selection criteria? overall culture?) but it’s working so far.
We have a fairly tight kernel of people here so far, who both help ‘set the tone’, arrived for similar (but not identical) reasons, and have somewhat common expectations.
(By ‘not identical’ and ‘somewhat’, I mean ‘try asking what it is we’re trying to do here’ and then remember to step back. )
