I recall the beginning being a bit rough but it getting better.
Not much of a gamer, but I do enjoy playing pixel dungeon on my phone. Someone has released a Lovecraft themed pixel dungeonā¦
I only discovered it yesterday, but so far, so fun.
BATTLETECH (apparently it has to be in all caps) is about to go live on Steam. I Kickstarted it approximately 78 years ago, it feels like. Itās been preloading since yesterday afternoon, and, I hope, will be ready for me after work today. (For some reason, Iām only getting about 150K/second when I just downloaded For The King a few days ago at 4.8G/secondā¦ thanks bunches Charter.)
I have a couple of fond memories of ridiculously slow, overnight, but intriguing, Battletech brawls at cons in my college days. I hope this game captures the same magic of complicated heat management rules and funny-looking character sheets with lots of bubbles to fill in.
Battletech is pretty good! Itās teaching me that I know very little about Battletech tactics and better learn fast if I donāt want to burn through my light mechs like popcorn.
And itās the second game Iāve ever played that let you choose āthey/them/theirā pronouns for your character (and make a very androgynous portrait if you likeā¦ or an angry grandma, or an anime pretty-boy, or whatever ā quite a diverse set of looks).
Dropped in a new video card in my PC and now I can finally play this game at more than 17 FPS, yay!
Iāve not read youāre spoilered text but am aware of the controversy and having barely begun the game it does not waste any time letting you know where it stands.
Considering the way video card prices have been inflated latelyā¦ Iām sorry for your walletās loss.
Itās insane! I put my old video card up for sale and spent a couple of weeks looking for a deal and any card at a āreasonableā price was snapped up as soon as it was posted.
Wound up going for an only slightly overprices gt 1030 because I just couldnāt justify spending twice as much for only slightly better performance.
I got hit by the inflation of memory prices when I finally upgraded my computer to a Ryzen 2700X just recently, so I know the feeling.
On the plus sideā¦ itās been almost exactly a decade since I last upgraded, and I went from a cinebench score of 298 to 1776 with the upgrade (yeah, I benchmarked firstā¦ wanted to make sure I had data). And thatās using the same video card, and before doing any overclocking other than telling the motherboard how to find the correct memory timings. Even the OpenGL test got a huge boost in framerate from the change.
The difference is night & day on things like games or ripping DVDsā¦
Iām still playing through Okami. Good grief, but this game is long if you make any sort of attempt at getting any of the various sets of collectibles in it (and even more so if youāre trying to be a completionist). I have almost 60 hours of play on my save game currently. Still enjoying the heck out of it.
The main criticism Iād have about it is that too many of the conversations are either unskippable or have a delay before you can skip them. This got to be extremely annoying in one situation where I was forced to interact with the same character over and over in an area, and the character had the same long dialog every timeā¦ and in part of the conversation, another character even comments that āhavenāt we heard all of this already?ā Much later on I realized that you can sometimes skip those sections, but you need to hit the start button while in the conversation, wait for it to (maybe) give you a prompt to skip, then hit the start button again. I really wish theyād streamlined that control method a bit more.
To be honest, Iām an absolute beginner on it myself. Iām mainly considering doing some small amount of overclocking on the Ryzen because they seem to have made it dead simple (well, as simple as you can get when youāre pushing things past the warrantied speeds/voltagesā¦).
One of the places Iāve been looking for information is Tomās Hardware, and it looks like they have an article that may cover what youāre looking for. From what Iāve gathered, a lot of it depends on the motherboard youāre using, and how far you want to try to push thingsā¦
Remember start small and step it up in increments.
Ugh. I made the mistake of downloading the 3D Mark demo through Steam before my upgrade to try to get some comparison performance numbers with it. Tried a few of the tests, but they all apparently would crash at random points through their run, with nothing but a āthere was a problemā error message.
Then, after fighting with that a bit, I gave upā¦ and thatās when I discovered that the thing has achievements. In benchmarking software! For things like submitting a benchmark score with specific digits in it, or submitting an impossibly high scoreā¦! So, thatāll be another 0% completed entry in my library.
(And, I just now spotted a review of it that mentions that it doesnāt have support for the processor in my old system. Woulda been nice to know that beforehandā¦)
Itās all good 'til you let out the blue smoke.
I donāt generally get wound up about them, but itās sometimes fun to get every one thatās available in a good game. Though, it gets a little aggravating when games (or anything else) that I didnāt like end up dragging down my āCompletion Rateā.
On the bright side, while doing a little digging around on something unrelated, I saw that the general consensus seems to be that games donāt count until you get at least one achievement in them. Since I was never in any danger of getting any of the achievements for 3DMark, Iāll just make sure not to use the Steam version in the future. And since it for some reason seems to have vanished out of my library since the upgrade, that shouldnāt be a problemā¦
I have to say, I have a slight Pavlovian response to the ādingā you get when a Playstation trophy unlocks. Some years back I made it my SMS tone so I could feel a sense of achievement whenever someone messaged me
Ding social master trophy!
Finished the base games campaign on the witcher 3. Dlc next then maybe prey.
Finished Far Cry 5 yesterday. As far as pure gameplay, it was perhaps the best yet. Story was eeeehhhhh though, and that endingā¦
Theres something called flame in the flood going free on the humble bundle today.
I saw that one yesterday, grabbed it, and played a little last night. Interesting mix of features, sort of like a cross between a roguelike and a survival sim. Doesnāt do much teaching, but many of the systems seem to reveal themselves fairly organically, so long as you try everything.
I managed to survive a few days, trap some rabbits, and make some fur-lined gloves before I got killed by a boar. The death was kind of disappointing, since I couldnāt figure out anything to do against the boar other than just try to dodge it when it charged.
