Hey, {appropriate term of endearment}, it's cold outside

Went outside to check.

Yep. That is fucking cold.

Glad it’s WfH tomorrow

Technically it’s ‘only’ -6ºF right now, but the wind chill is much worse than I can remember for decades.

Why would I know this? Because dogs still have to go outside to do their business, no matter what the weather service says.

Meanwhile, in Australia:

Meanwhile in New England, this southerner is comfortable enough. I went out to shovel snow at 4am and it was in the 20s with no wind at all (and only 1-2" of snow). Inside, it’s almost 70 without even bothering to make a fire in the fireplace. Next week it’s supposed to be in the mid 50s out.

However, there are about 4 months of winter left before springsummerfall and New England winters have a way of being tricky. It may just be saving up to whomp us later.

My dog likes a little patch of ground to do his business. With two-feet high snow banks and him being a chihuahua/whippet mix in a small sweater, we’re feeling it.

AFAIA @Wisconsin_Platt doesn’t actually live in Platteville WI and apparently never has

I woke up this morning to OUR BACK DOOR WIDE OPEN in the -3F weather.

After a brief panic about intruders – pretty unlikely since one of our dogs is an enthusiastic pitbull – I found our other dog standing around in the back, shivering like the dumbass she is. I was in sweatpants, no shirt and just socks but still had to stand there and call her several times before she came in.

Grabbed my laser thermometer and found the dining room floor was 37 degrees, which tells me the door probably wasn’t open for too long. The hall thermostat read 55 (it’s set to 71, which really means about 68 in most of the house).

My guess is, my spouse forgot to latch the deadbolt, and the temperature drop and/or wind and/or the dogs leaning on the door bounced it open? Blergh.

Well, maybe there’s a Wisconsin on Mars?

That’s Celcius, for the record

At that temperature, does the F/C distinction really matter?

20º C increase in daytime high forecast over the next four days. (28º increase in wind chill.) Windsor, Ontario may set an all-time record today for daytime high of -21º. Anyone under 25 who grew up in Toronto has never experienced this level of cold.

We got about 30cm of snow Monday evening and overnight. Yesterday we saw our new neighbour across the street struggling to clear her driveway, and went over to help. It turns out she grew up in Florida and just moved to the 6ix a few months ago. We were able to give her shoveling lessons.

Now that we’re getting into the middle of the day, we’re on the upswing: -17ºF at present, and rising. Apparently only went to -19ºF. However, the wind chill was more bitter than usual (very strong winds, because of course) so even now the wind chill is at -50ºF.

Surprisingly, my dog doesn’t want to go outside. And I found a millipede in the middle of the floor that normally I would have taken outdoors to get rid of, but what kind of monster do you think I am? So, guess I have a new roommate.

Close enough. Would you really notice the difference between -37F (-38.3C) and -34.6F (-37C)?

No I’d go inside.

HA. I’ve used that name for ages and have never once lived amongst the cheeseheads. And only recently moved to within spitting distance of them.

Next you’ll be telling us that your name isn’t Yon Yonson, and you don’t work for a lumbermill.

While I did know a Yonson who went by “Yon” and I do have some basic levels in Lumberjacking, I’ve never pursued it as a professional.

In St. Louis we’re going from a high of 6F today to 61 on Saturday.

We’re 2F from beating the record low for any January 30 on record – Saturday will be 2F away from the record high for any Feb 2 on record.
