Molesters Being Outed

An unusual case, but yes, it does happen occasionally. At least this has a somewhat happy ending.

Iā€™m glad he got to meet his daughter. What a sad situation.

and also, I just canā€™t say it enough, fuck the jerks at the Catholic Church who have enabled and covered up child molestation.

There was a situation like this on the Drew Carey Show as I recall. Drew Carey had been raped by hus band teacher. They treated it like an absurd joke. It didnā€™t seem funny to me then or now.

This synchs with a book I once read called The No Asshole Rule. In the book, the behaviour examined was when people try to turn themselves into ā€œsuperstarsā€ by, yes, being good at their jobs, but also by undermining those they work with. Often when a ā€œsuperstarā€ leaves, no-one takes their placeā€¦ yet the team that remains does better overall.

So itā€™s okay to try to be the best, but itā€™s not okay to try to keep your colleagues from being the best.

Oh, that sounds interesting. I might pick up a copy.

Iā€™d say get it from the library if you can. It was strong on examples, and strong on documenting the damage assholes can cause, but weak on what to do if you ID such a person in your organisation. ā€œIf youā€™re in a meeting with one, imagine you are floating in warm water, down a pleasant streamā€ was a piece of advice from the book.

/facepalm

The suggestion I have is the only one that has ever worked for me: do whatever it takes to no longer work with/answer to someone like this. And yes, I have actually quit a job in order to get away. Seriously. Thatā€™s how dangerous they are, both mentally and also from a work evaluation point of view.

Iā€™m watching the ā€œTarzanā€ series on TCM, and the first one with Lex Barker as the titular character is on right now. His stepdaughter outed him in her book; and this is a woman who had a lot of shit go on in her life: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1988/02/02/detour-a-powerful-hollywood-horror-story/6b29c002-2682-4818-96cd-2a95334426ff/?utm_term=.85f28f8b58fc

Mary Karr is great. I loved The Liarsā€™ Club and carried it around with me for weeks after I finished it. I donā€™t think sheā€™s written much else though, but she ought to write more.

On the other hand, I canā€™t stand David Foster Wallace. His writing has always seemed completely douchey and insufferable to me.

Negligence is expensive!

Not if you divide it by the number of victims.

Thatā€™s why I called it ā€œnegligence.ā€
