Somewhere in the World There's Always a Sportsballs

That’s what he claims, but baseball’s Dowd Report shows that wasn’t true. Even if it was true, not betting on a certain day could signal gambling interests on how to proceed.

Yeah, I was not arguing that he wasn’t compromised by his gambling.

Yeah, I’m a bit skeptical with anything that Rose ever said about this. What I do remember is that Rose denied, denied, and denied that he ever gambled on baseball. He finally agreed to Giamatti’s conditions that he would leave baseball and be banned, which seems to mean MLB had the goods on him.

Only later did Rose finally admit to placing bets, and it was then he claimed he never bet against his own team. Not sure that I could ever believe anything he said.

:100:

However, of course with Rose, it’s always complicated.

I don’t remember this (found in Wikipedia), but my husband sure does:

When questioned about it [statutory rape accusation] by a female reporter from The Philadelphia Inquirer, Alex Coffey, in August of 2022, Rose replied, “It was 55 years ago, babe.”[111][112]

Pete Rose was incredibly gross. That would be why I wouldn’t push to reinstate him.

Nats ballpark has a grubby sportsbook right in the stadium. And when MLB first took over the Expos, they filled the stadium with gambling ads. They are hypocritical on gambling. Eventually, gambling will destroy sports and the leagues have a hand in causing it to happen.

Ban lifted, but we have yet to even just see his name on the ballot for entry into the baseball hall of fame. Then there’s the vote, and it takes at least 75% of the votes to make it in. This year has been settled. No new entries until next year.

It will destroy more than just sports. We’re going to see an epidemic of gambling addiction. And not just from sports. I can’t believe we’re allowing slots for real money on your phone. It’d be like installing a vodka vending machine in every potential alcoholic’s home.

Maybe it’s not very post-postmodern of me, but I still think male sports figures should be suitable role models for the (mostly) little boys who are inclinded toward hero-worship. I certainly don’t have Victorian-era expectations, but it seems like a series of bars of exceedingly minuscule height to expect them to pay their taxes, keep their dicks in their pants unless with other consenting adults of at least 18 years of age, not have 10+ kids with 10+ women, play their sport fairly and honorably (which obvs includes eschewing bad drugs and gambling), not abuse women nor children in any way, use some of their $zillions to help children/society…y’know, basically act like A Fucking Human Being, albeit a very fortunate, wealthy, and talented one.

Oh, and get silly haircuts/color. The more silly haircuts/color, and the more even sillier haircuts the better, esp in sports. It discourages rigid conformity, which is soul-destroying.

Among the many reasons I gave up baseball was learning that a young Cubs player I really liked had beaten up his girlfriend. Disgusting. His was like the 5th case I’d already heard about before August that year. Gross.

His eligibility expired years ago. He’ll need to be voted on by the classic era veterans committee, not the regular HOF voters. They won’t vote until December 2027.

Unfortunately, those who ruin societies for fun and profit decided they’d like to bring back debtors’ prisons. I’m sure they’ve invested in new ways to put a lot more people in debt. Sports betting among billionaires is likely to be along the lines of that group in Squid Game. :weary:

Yeah, these are people that think the government are the heroes in the Hunger Game movies. :grimacing:

This is good news. Honestly I thought he would leave, Sparky is a EFL Championship level manager, the National League is far below someone of his standard. Hopefully he will bring in some players who wouldn’t normally consider Carlisle or the National League.

Talking of recruiting players

He was a decent manager 15 years ago, but he was lacking as head of recruitment. The only decent player he brought in was Owen Moxon, and he was a Carlisle youth team player when he was manager.

We might have a chance next season. I’m not ready to bet my savings on promotion, but I don’t think we’ll be at the bottom of the table.
