I was curious about the given etymology of “Battery Park”, and it took me a hot second to realize that by “assault batteries” they meant artillery, and not a misphrasing of the common expression related to violent crime.

I wonder whether this means that people are rejecting the institute of marriage, or feel less societal pressure to respect said institute? Or something else.

I used to think I knew a lot about NYC and its history, but I learned quite a few things from that. Thanks for sharing.

Less societal pressure. Despite of this, the marriage rate in Germany is still relatively high for tax reasons.
The system of tax brackets is essentially still designed around the 1950ies idea of a nuclear family, i.e. one provider who generates the bulk of the family income working full time and a partner that works either part time or not at all.
So there’s a tangible incentive and it’s a lot easier to get a divorce now than it was then.

They seem like a country that doesn’t care for a convention like marriage and are more interested in what’s best for the child… Plus… you know… Bjork.
