1529 Map of the Americas by Diego Ribero

We should change New England’s name back.

Cool, I like the sound of ā€œTierra de Garay del Norteā€ or maybe ā€œTierra de Garay Altaā€ instead of North Alabama

Map of estimated radioactive fallout in the United States from nuclear testing

Jesus, do you see that streak across N. GA? And in south east GA and Northern FL around Jacksonville… Obviously not as strong as in the SW, but that’s unexpected (to me, at least).

NY too. I have a vague memory when I was very young of fallout warnings and drinking milk. Radioactive strontium? Must have really scared my parents.

Do you remember duck and cover videos in school, too? I always forget how late they showed those in schools (probably varied by district, I’d expect). They were gone by the time I was in school, but my parents saw them (both born in 52).

I remember some drills- but none of the films. Not hiding under the desks, though. The nuns had us in the hallway facing the cinder block walls and putting our hands over our heads to protect us. My hands must be mighty strong! Switched to public school in 4th grade.

Maybe Cuban Missile Crisis?

Mom protested the drills and refused to attend them during her last year of high school. The assholes had the kids gathered on the stage, where the proscenium would have crushed them.

They wouldn’t let her graduate because of it.

I grew up near what was then Watsonia Barracks, and is now Simpson Barracks.
It had a dome in one corner, which it was well known was covering a satellite dish.

We never did any sort of duck and cover drills in the 70s and 80s.

Maybe that wasn’t a thing anywhere in Australia at the time.

My theory was that the satellite dish made the Barracks a nuclear target and if it all kicked off we were all well inside the instant vaporisation zone anyway, so what would have been the point?

When the only threat was from Hiroshima-size nukes the duck and cover drills had a chance of increasing survivability. Once the threat shifted to Megaton-size devices delivered by ICBM the drills didn’t make sense anymore.

Where did you find this? Must know more!

I’m especially curious about the hotspot in the upper Delta area. Was a device tested near Cairo/New Madrid/Paducah?

I’ve never lived in Seattle, but I think it has a pretty straightforward grid. Several pretty straightforward grids.

Lucky how it stopped at the border.
