Responding to the criticism, the department issued a statement Thursday offering 16 examples of historic figures it said fit that description. That they developed highly specialized abilities that helped them later in life is “factual and well documented,” the department stated.

Asked for more information Friday, it cited as references “The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution,” an 1895 book by William Cooper Nell, and “Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895,″ a 2006 book edited by Paul Finkelman.

But other sources offer conflicting descriptions of the 16 historic figures, and critics came forward to attack the department’s claims. Several argued that nearly half the figures highlighted by the state were never enslaved. Others, who did spend time in slavery, did not gain their skills from their servitude.

“They just threw out a bunch of names to make it seem like something good came of (slavery),” said Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Education Association teachers union. “The reality of it is, the facts don’t back up what they are saying.”

[edit:] Can’t vouch for this person’s research, but they did cite a lot of their work, which is more than Florida’s “experts” did. Link on the image goes to a twitter thread.

It really is. And far too many people were willing to let Roe die (mainly white, straight, male Democrats), because they thought that it wouldn’t impact anyone but a few women
Of course much of the LGBTQ+ community understood the connection between the rights of privacy that Roe was decided on and their own victories in the courts since then
There was a lot more understanding of how these things intersect among queer activists - maybe not some cisgendered, white, wealthy gay men who are for some fucked up reasons still Republicans, like Andrew Sullivan - but most did and still do intuitively understand that kind of intersectionality. Unfortunately, far too many white cisgendered feminists don’t get that the other way. Yeah, Roe is gone, but the way to start clawing back that right is to start specifically with defending the trans community from these attacks that they are facing right now. Doing so will help build up the structures we had in place for a while that gave people greater rights across the board.
